Supplication held back until the Prophet is blessed

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 486
“Sa’id ibn al-Musayyib reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, ‘Verily, the supplication is suspended between the heavens and the earth. Nothing ascends from it until you send blessings upon your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.'”

Description:

  • This hadith emphasizes the importance of sending blessings (salawāt) upon the Prophet ﷺ when making du‘ā (supplication).
  • Sending blessings is a form of honoring and acknowledging the Prophet ﷺ, showing love, respect, and obedience to Allah’s messenger.

Meaning:

  • The supplication is “suspended” if blessings are not sent, meaning it does not ascend to Allah.
  • Allah and the Prophet ﷺ do not need these blessings; it is a way for believers to perform a good deed.
  • Sending blessings is part of a test: following the Qur’an and the Prophet’s teachings demonstrates obedience, faith, and submission.
  • This shows that acts of worship are both spiritual benefits and tests of our willingness to obey Allah’s guidance.

What We Learn Today:

  • Always begin or conclude du‘ā with salawāt on the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Sending blessings is a good deed and a test of obedience, not something Allah or the Prophet needs.
  • Practically, it teaches spiritual etiquette in prayer and reinforces sincerity.

📖Qur’an 33:56
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.”

This verse commands believers to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, reinforcing the hadith.

📖 Qur’an 4:64
“And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of Allah…”

The Prophet ﷺ is the means of guidance and closeness to Allah, showing that obedience – including sending blessings- is part of our test and devotion.
