The Prophet calls upon Allah for the ill

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3565
Ali reported: The Prophet ﷺ would say when he visited the sick: Take away the pain, O Lord of the people, and heal it, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no trace of illness.”

Explanation:
This powerful supplication shows that true healing comes from Allah alone. The Prophet ﷺ acknowledged that while humans may apply treatments, it is ultimately Allah who cures. His healing is perfect – without side effects, scars, or relapses. This dua teaches both spiritual trust and humility when facing illness.

Some people might ask, “If healing is from Allah, then why should we take medicine?”
The answer is simple: The medicine itself is part of Allah’s system. He created nature, plants, minerals, and the human mind capable of discovering cures. Medicine is not against tawakkul (trust in Allah); it is part of the means Allah has provided.

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5678
The Prophet ﷺ said: Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has also sent down its cure.”

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 26:80
“And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.”
Healing is always by Allah’s will, no matter what treatment is used.

  • Medicine is made from natural materials – like plants, minerals, and chemicals – which are all created by Allah.
Example: Penicillin comes from mold. Painkillers come from tree bark. Insulin comes from pancreas cells. All of these are creations of Allah.

  • Knowledge of medicine came from Allah.
    📖Quran 96:5
“He taught man what he did not know.”
Human beings only discovered the cures because Allah allowed them to learn and guided their research.

  • Even with medicine, some people don’t get cured – because the medicine itself has no power unless Allah allows it to work.
Two patients can take the same treatment – one recovers, the other doesn’t. That shows it’s not the pill, but Allah’s will.

  • The body heals because Allah created healing mechanisms (like white blood cells, platelets, enzymes). These are systems designed by Him.

📖Quran 16:69
“Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down for you.” There emerges from their bellies (the bees) a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Surely in that is a sign for people who reflect.
Natural remedies like honey are mentioned directly in the Qur’an as sources of healing.

📖Quran 2:164
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth… and what Allah sends down from the sky of rain, giving life thereby to the earth… and in the directing of the winds and the clouds… are signs for people who reason.”
All natural processes, including those that support medicine, are divine systems from Allah.

So, taking medicine is not against trusting Allah – it is part of utilizing the tools He gave us while still knowing that only He gives the final cure.
