Skin Nerves In Quran
📖Quran 4:56
Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses – We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.
Modern science has shown that pain is felt through nociceptors, specialized sensory receptors located in the skin. These receptors detect harmful stimuli such as extreme heat or injury and send signals to the brain, where the sensation of pain is processed, When the skin is completely burned, these nociceptors are destroyed, which means the person can no longer feel pain in that area. The Qur’an remarkably states that in Hell, Allah will replace the burnt skin with new skin so that the person can continue to feel the punishment. This scientific fact about pain receptors was discovered only in the 19th and 20th centuries, while the Qur’an mentioned it over 1400 years ago.

What are the classifications of burns?
Burns are classified by degree depending on how deeply and severely they penetrate the skin’s surface: first, second, third, or fourth. It may be impossible to classify a burn immediately when it occurs. It can progress over time, so you may not know the full extent for a day or two.
- First-degree (superficial) burns. First-degree burns affect only the outer layer of skin, the epidermis. The burn site is red, painful, dry, and has no blisters. Mild sunburn is an example. Long-term tissue damage is rare and often consists of an increase or decrease in the skin color.
- Second-degree (partial thickness) burns. Second-degree burns involve the epidermis and part of the lower layer of skin, the dermis. The burn site looks red and blistered and may be swollen and painful.
- Third-degree (full thickness) burns. Third-degree burns destroy the epidermis and dermis. They may go into the innermost layer of skin, the subcutaneous tissue. The burn site may look white or blackened and charred.
- Fourth-degree burns. Fourth-degree burns go through both layers of the skin and underlying tissue as well as deeper tissue, possibly involving muscle and bone. There is no feeling in the area since the nerve endings are destroyed.
So, only in third- and fourth-degree burns do people lose the sensation of pain in the burned area due to the destruction of nerve endings. This key medical fact aligns perfectly with the Qur’anic verse that says the skin will be replaced so the pain can be felt again, meaning the punishment will be fully experienced.

Additional Information
The Qur’an is not primarily a scientific textbook, but it provides signs and guidance that point to the wonders of the universe and creation. Its core purpose is to offer a comprehensive framework for how to live a righteous and purposeful life, guiding humanity in understanding why we are here and how to fulfill our role in this world. While the Qur’an speaks about the natural world and the universe, it does not delve deeply into scientific explanations. Instead, it encourages humans to observe, reflect, and explore the world around them. As the Qur’an mentions, humanity is urged to “Say, ‘Travel through the land and observe how He originated creation. Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. (Surah Ankabut, 29:20)” and contemplate the creation of the heavens and the earth, the cycles of nature, and the intricate balance of life. These reflections are meant to inspire curiosity and deepen our understanding of the world, leaving space for human discovery and scientific exploration. The Qur’an acknowledges the human capacity for knowledge and exploration, guiding us to seek wisdom through our own efforts and observation, with faith and reverence for the Creator.
