Seek Refuge from the Evil that Happens in Darkness
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3366
Aisha reported: The Prophet ﷺ looked at the moon and said, “O Aisha, seek refuge in Allah from the evil of this, for this is ‘the darkness when it settles.’”
Source:
The Prophet ﷺ was teaching us that when the night fully settles, it can bring hidden dangers. Darkness provides cover for crime, mischief, and evil actions. Thieves, killers, and oppressors often use the night to hide their wrongdoings. Even harmful animals, insects, and predators become more active in the night. This is why the Qur’an describes “the darkness when it settles” as something from which protection should be sought, Seeking refuge in Allah at that time is not a sin if missed, but it is a way of remembering Allah and safeguarding oneself spiritually and physically. The Prophet ﷺ was sent to guide humanity in every matter, from A to Z – big or small – and he did not leave anything beneficial unmentioned. This reminder is part of his complete guidance.
Evidence that crime increases in darkness:
- Statistics even in modern times show that crimes such as theft, robbery, assault, and immorality often peak during late night hours. Darkness provides a shield for those who wish to commit what Allah has forbidden.
- The hadith aligns with human experience: people feel more vulnerable to harm when visibility is low, and evil-minded individuals take advantage of this.

Quranic Context:
📖Quran 113:3
And from the evil of darkness when it settles.
📖Quran 6:76
When the night covered him with darkness, he saw a star. He said, “This is my lord.” But when it set, he said, “I do not love those that set.”
(Here night is described as something overwhelming that covers all things.)
📖Quran 7:54
Indeed, your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the day with the night, chasing it rapidly, and the sun, the moon, and the stars are subjected by His command.
(This verse shows night overpowering day, a sign of Allah’s power but also a time of caution for humans.)
📖Quran 36:37
A sign for them is the night: We withdraw from it the day, and behold, they are in darkness.
Thus, the Prophet ﷺ reminded us to seek Allah’s refuge when darkness spreads, as it is a time when evil can be more active. But remembering Allah protects the believer, and guidance was given so that nothing is left out from the Prophet’s teachings.
