  • Major and Minor Sins in Islam

    1. Major Sins

Major sins are serious offenses in Islam that require sincere repentance. They are explicitly mentioned in the Qur’an and Hadith as acts that bring severe punishment in this life and the Hereafter if one does not repent.

Here are some of the major sins that should be avoided:

    1. Shirk (Associating partners with Allah) – The gravest sin in Islam. (Qur’an 4:48)
    2. Murder (Unjust killing of a soul) – Forbidden in Islam except in cases of justice. (Qur’an 5:32)
    3. Magic (Sihr) – Practicing or believing in magic is a severe sin. (Qur’an 2:102)
    4. Abandoning Salah (Prayer) – Neglecting obligatory prayers is a major sin. (Sunan Ibn Majah 1079)
    5. Disrespecting parents – Disobeying or harming them is among the biggest sins. (Sahih Bukhari 5976)
    6. False testimony and lying – A serious offense that leads to injustice. (Sahih Bukhari 2654)
    7. Consuming interest (Riba) – Dealing with usury is cursed in Islam. (Qur’an 2:275)
    8. Unlawful sexual relations (Zina) – Adultery and fornication are major sins. (Qur’an 17:32)
    9. Stealing (Theft) – Punishable under Islamic law. (Qur’an 5:38)
    10. Drinking alcohol and drugs – Intoxicants are strictly prohibited. (Qur’an 5:90)
    11. Gambling (Maisir) – A sinful act that leads to destruction. (Qur’an 5:90)
    12. Backbiting and slander – Comparing it to eating the flesh of a dead brother. (Qur’an 49:12)
    13. Breaking promises and betrayal – A sign of hypocrisy. (Sahih Bukhari 33)
    14. Arrogance and pride – The cause of Iblis’s downfall. (Sahih Muslim 91)

    Minor Sins

Minor sins are lesser in severity but can accumulate over time if done persistently or without repentance. They can be forgiven through regular acts of worship like Salah, fasting, dhikr, and sincere repentance.

Some examples of minor sins include:

    • Looking at something impermissible (with desire)
    • Engaging in useless talk (idle gossip, pointless discussions)
    • Delaying obligatory prayers without a valid reason
    • Lying (not in serious matters)
    • Excessive joking that may hurt others
    • Wasting time and neglecting duties
    • Eating excessively (gluttony)

    Modern-Day Examples of Minor Sins

    • Listening to inappropriate songs/music (with vulgarity or sinful content)
    • Watching impermissible movies/TV shows (containing immodesty, immorality, or misleading ideologies)
    • Playing or watching sports excessively (to the point of neglecting religious duties)
    • Spending too much time on social media (leading to gossip, envy, or distraction from worship)
    • Wearing immodest clothing that does not align with Islamic teachings
    • Engaging in online arguments and insults
    • Overindulgence in entertainment (movies, games, sports, etc., when they distract from obligations)
    • Neglecting family and responsibilities due to excessive leisure activities
    • Engaging in frivolous challenges or trends that go against Islamic values

This hadith highlights the immense mercy of Allah, stating that regular acts of worship, such as the five daily prayers, attending Friday prayers, and fasting in Ramadan, serve as a means of expiating minor sins. However, it also emphasizes that major sins must be avoided
