Protection from Leprosy, Madness, Contagion, and Evil Ailments
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 1554
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would say, “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leprosy, madness, contagion, and evil ailments.
- This hadith emphasizes that seeking refuge in Allah glorifies Him and acknowledges His guidance.
- By asking Allah for protection, a believer is reminded to follow His commands, which itself is a form of protection.
- The diseases mentioned- leprosy, madness, contagious diseases, and other harmful ailments – can impact both physical and mental well-being. Seeking refuge is a spiritual means to guard against them, while also encouraging practical measures like hygiene and caution.
When seeking refuge in Allah from these harms:
- Leprosy: Following cleanliness and avoiding situations that spread skin infections.
- Madness: Maintaining mental health through prayer, remembrance of Allah, and avoiding harmful substances or stressors.
- Contagious diseases: Observing hygiene, avoiding epidemic zones, and following medical or governmental advice.
- Evil ailments: Protecting oneself from both physical sickness and harmful lifestyle choices that can lead to disease.
Even if a person does not fully benefit from this remembrance, Allah can alter or either to protect them, give them something better in this life, or grant them reward in the Hereafter.
Thus, supplication serves both as guidance for the believer and as a means of divine protection and mercy.
