Plant Perception In Quran
Quran 17:44
The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them exalt Him. And there is not a thing except that it exalts [ Allah ] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing and Forgiving.
Quran 22:18
Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates – for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.
It has been scientifically proven that plants release tears or fluid to protect themselves from the harmful effects of bacteria and fungi. The purpose of these fluids is to fight off pathogens, to regulate and maintain optimal moisture levels in the leaves, and for the transport of nutrients in the plant.

The Quran mentions that everything in the heavens and the earth, including plants, exalts Allah, but humans may not always understand the way in which they do so (Quran 17:44). This idea is further reinforced in Quran 22:18, where it states that all beings, from trees to animals, and even the sun, moon, and stars, prostrate to Allah. Though this concept was established long ago, recent scientific discoveries are beginning to reveal that plants are not as passive as we once thought. For instance, plants release fluids or “tears” as a protective measure against harmful pathogens, which parallels the idea of them responding to their environment in a purposeful, almost sentient way. The Quran confirmed this before science caught up, with verses that suggest the active role of trees and plants in their submission to Allah’s will.
The Quran describes that everything in creation, including non-living things like shadows, submits to Allah’s will.
Quran 25:45-46
Do you not see that your Lord has made the shadow incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allah? And He is the one who made it. And He is aware of what you do.”
This verse emphasizes that the natural world, even the shadows, submits to Allah’s divine order. Shadows are not sentient beings, yet they follow the movement of the sun, symbolizing submission to Allah’s will. This concept aligns with a deeper idea in the Quran that everything in creation, whether living beings or inanimate objects like shadows, exists in submission to Allah, whether consciously or unconsciously. The idea of the “shadow” can be extended to all creatures, even non-Muslims, who may not consciously recognize their submission to Allah but still follow His will in a broader sense through their existence within the natural order, Even if non-Muslims do not consciously bow or submit in worship to Allah, they, like the shadows, still exist within His divine framework and laws. Their existence, their very being, is part of the larger cosmic submission to Allah’s will. Just as shadows follow the sun’s movement without conscious choice, humans, whether they acknowledge it or not—are part of the divine order. Their lives unfold in a way that is still governed by Allah’s overarching will, though they might not submit to Him consciously, Thus, the metaphor of the “shadow” serves as a reminder that even those who don’t actively worship Allah, or who reject Him, still function within His will. Their lives and actions ultimately follow the same divine plan that governs all creation, and just like the shadow that bows in submission, they too, whether willingly or unwillingly, submit to Allah’s ultimate sovereignty.
Additional Information
The Qur’an is not a book of science, but it contains timeless truths that remain final and unchangeable, regardless of scientific discoveries. Our belief in the Qur’an remains firm, even if science evolves over time. Islam does not reject science; rather, it encourages seeking knowledge as long as it aligns with Islamic teachings. However, if any scientific claim contradicts the Qur’an, we can simply reject it, as divine revelation holds the ultimate truth. The Qur’an has foretold many scientific realities long before they were discovered. For instance, in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:30), Allah says: Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe? This verse indicates that knowledge about creation came to those who disbelieve, as they later discovered scientific facts such as the, Big Bang theory, and the essential role of water in life. Despite gaining this knowledge, many still reject the truth of the Qur’an. This serves as a reminder that while science may uncover realities, divine revelation is the ultimate and unchanging truth.
