Pit of Sorrow for Quran Reciters Who Show Off
đSunan al-TirmidhiÌ 2383
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, âSeek refuge in Allah from the pit of sorrow.â They said, âO Messenger of Allah, what is the pit of sorrow?â The Prophet said, âIt is a valley in Hell from which Hell itself seeks refuge one hundred times a day.â They said, âO Messenger of Allah, who will enter it?â The Prophet said, âThe reciters who only acted to be seen.â
Description
This hadith is a terrifying warning against riyaÌ (showing off in worship). The Prophet ï·ș emphasized that Hell has a valley so severe that even Hell itself seeks refuge from it one hundred times a day. The people thrown into it are not ordinary sinners but those who pretended to worship Allah while seeking fame and praise from others. Their Qurâan recitation, prayers, or deeds were for the eyes of people, not for Allah, The point is not that Hell has independent power to make dua, but that Allah created it in such a way that it can express fear and severity in forms that we may not fully understand.
How can Hell seek refuge?
- By Allahâs permission – Just as the Qurâan says every creation glorifies Allah though we do not comprehend their glorification.
- As a symbolic warning – It may not be ârefugeâ in the same way humans ask, but rather a description of its horror. If Hell, a place of punishment, fears this valley, then what about the human soul?
- To shake human hearts – Allah allows His creation (like Hell, trees, stones) to express emotions we understand, so the message penetrates deeper.
Why does Allah let Hell express this?
Because it makes the reality vivid. If a tree can cry, then Hell crying or seeking refuge is not strange. It is a form of divine teaching, so that we humans donât dismiss these warnings as mere words.
- Modern science has discovered that trees and plants react to harm – they release chemical signals when cut, some emit sounds when stressed, and others communicate through roots. This shows that creation can âexpressâ things beyond human language. So, when Hell seeks refuge, it is not impossible – it is simply another part of Allahâs creation manifesting fear in its own form.
Quranic Context
đQuran 17:44
The seven heavens, the earth, and whatever is in them glorify Him. There is nothing that does not glorify His praise, but you do not understand their glorification. Indeed, He is Ever-Forbearing, All-Forgiving.
Everything created by Allah can express itself in ways we may not perceive.
