Severity of Tyranny and Severing Family Ties
📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2511
Abu Bakrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no sin more worthy of Allah hastening the punishment upon its practitioner in the world – along with what is in store for him in the Hereafter – than tyranny (oppression) and severing the ties of kinship.”
Description:
This hadith delivers a serious warning about two specific sins that trigger Allah’s punishment both in this world and in the Hereafter:
- Tyranny (oppression, ظلم)
- Severing ties of kinship (قطع الرحم)
The Prophet ﷺ is teaching us that while most sins may be punished later, these two are so destructive that their consequences often start in this life, even before the Day of Judgment.
What is Tyranny?
- Tyranny means unjust power, abuse, exploitation, or hurting others without right.
- It can happen in families, governments, workplaces, or even in friendships.
- Whether it’s physical violence, emotional abuse, or financial injustice, Allah does not ignore the cries of the oppressed.
- Even if the world turns a blind eye – Allah doesn’t. And He responds faster than people expect.
What is Severing Ties of Kinship?
- It means cutting off family relations without just cause – abandoning parents, siblings, relatives, or refusing to speak to them out of pride, envy, or anger.
- Islam commands us to maintain the ties of blood and family, even if they aren’t perfect.
- Breaking family bonds invites divine anger, and restoring them brings divine mercy.
- What We Learn Today:
- In a time of political oppression, family feuds, and ego-driven conflicts – this hadith reminds us:
- Injustice will come back to destroy the one who commits it.
- Family ties are sacred, and keeping them is a source of barakah (blessing).
You want your life to be peaceful?
Don’t hurt others.
Don’t cut off your family.
Allah doesn’t delay punishing these sins – because they destroy societies from within.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 42:42
“The blame is only upon those who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. For them there will be a painful punishment.”
→ Tyranny invites Allah’s wrath in both worlds.
📖Quran 4:75
“And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah for the oppressed among men, women, and children…”
→ Islam teaches to protect the oppressed, not to be among the oppressors.
📖Quran 13:25
“But those who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined and cause corruption on earth — upon them is the curse, and they will have the worst home.”
→ Severing family ties is listed alongside corruption and earns Allah’s curse.
📖Quran 47:22-23
“Would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your ties of kinship? Such are the ones whom Allah has cursed, making them deaf and blind to the truth.”
→ Breaking family ties is a serious spiritual crime in the eyes of Allah.
