The Prophet Rejects Wealth for Devotion

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2347
Abu Umamah reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “My Lord presented me with the valley of Mecca that He might turn it into gold for me. I said: No, O Lord, rather I will be satiated some days and hungry some days. When I am hungry, I will humble myself before You and remember You. When I am satiated, I will be grateful to You and praise You.”

Description:
This hadith illustrates a profound moment during revelation when the Prophet ﷺ saw two paths – one of worldly abundance offered by disbelievers if he disobeyed, and one of obedience to Allah’s command. Allah showed him that even if he chose the worldly path, disbelievers could grant him everything he desired. Yet, he ﷺ chose humility, patience, and devotion to Allah.

Ways disbelievers could have given him everything if he disobeyed:

  1. Wealth and gold – the valley of Makkah could have been turned into immense riches.
  2. Power and authority – control over lands and people without moral or spiritual restrictions.
  3. Luxury and comfort – access to all worldly pleasures without struggle or humility.
  4. Social influence – fame, honor, and respect in society by following worldly desires.
  5. Security from hardship – no hunger, difficulty, or trial in life.

Yet the Prophet ﷺ refused all of it to maintain obedience, spiritual growth, and closeness to Allah.

What we learn today:

  • Obedience to Allah outweighs all worldly temptations.
  • Trials and blessings alike are tests to strengthen humility, gratitude, and faith.
  • Even the richest worldly offerings cannot replace sincere worship and spiritual success.
  • Modern temptations – wealth, fame, comfort – should never lead to compromising principles.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 28:77
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the Home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

📖Quran 64:15
Your wealth and your children are only a trial, but Allah alone has the ultimate reward.

📖Quran 20:131
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to some categories of them, its being but the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.

📖Quran 57:20
Know that the worldly life is but amusement, diversion, adornment, boasting among you, and competition in wealth and children. But the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah. So will you not reason?

The Prophet ﷺ chose Allah’s command over every worldly offer, teaching believers to prioritize faith, humility, and remembrance of Allah above material gain.
