Attaining Love of Allah Through Detachment
đSunan Ibn Majah 4102
It was narrated that Sahl bin Saâd As-Saâidi said: A man came to the Prophet ï·ș and said: âO Messenger of Allah, show me a deed which, if I do it, Allah will love me and people will love me.â The Messenger of Allah ï·ș said: âBe indifferent towards this world, and Allah will love you. Be indifferent to what is in peopleâs hands, and they will love you.â
Description:
This hadith presents a timeless, powerful formula for gaining both divine love and human respect – two things most people desperately seek.
- If you want Allahâs love, the Prophet ï·ș says: detach yourself from worldly attachment.
- If you want peopleâs love, stop being needy, envious, or obsessed with what others have.
The Arabic word used here is âaz-zuhdâ – which doesnât mean to abandon life or become poor, but to live in the world without letting it live inside your heart.
What Does âBe Indifferentâ Mean?
Being indifferent (zuhd) toward the world means:
- You use the world, but you donât worship it.
- You own things, but things donât own you.
- You work and earn, but your heart isnât tied to luxury, status, or greed.
- Youâre grateful when you have, patient when you donât.
Being indifferent to what is in peopleâs hands means:
- You donât constantly compare yourself.
- You donât beg, envy, or flatter people for what they own.
- You are content with what Allah has given you, and that contentment gives you dignity.
This detachment creates inner freedom, and people naturally admire those who arenât desperate for attention, money, or validation.
Quranic Context:
đQuran 57:20
âKnow that the life of this world is only play and amusement, adornment, boasting among yourselves, and competition in wealth and children â like the example of a rain… But in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion?â
â This verse echoes the hadith: the world is temporary and deceptive – donât cling to it.
đQuran 3:185
âEvery soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full reward on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is saved from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has truly succeeded. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of deception?â
â Real success is not in worldly gain, but in what remains in the hereafter.
đQuran 20:131
âDo not look longingly at what We have given some of them to enjoy â it is only the splendor of this worldly life by which We test them. The provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.â
â Donât envy what others have. What Allah has for you is far better – in both dunya and akhirah.
đQuran 10:62-64
âUnquestionably, the allies of Allah â there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. They are those who believed and were conscious of Allah. For them are good tidings in this worldly life and in the Hereafter.â
â Allah loves and protects those who live for Him, not for the dunya.
