Every word is against a person except in goodness
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2412
Umm Habibah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Every word of the son of Adam is against him, not for him, except for enjoining good, forbidding evil, or the remembrance of Allah.
This hadith teaches that most speech a human engages in will be a burden against him on the Day of Judgment. Idle talk, gossip, lies, insults, arguments, and useless chatter do not benefit a person; rather, they weigh heavily on his record of deeds. The tongue is a sharp weapon, and unless it is restrained, it causes more harm than good.
The exceptions mentioned by the Prophet ï·º are three:
- Enjoining good (amr bil ma‘ruf): Calling others to righteousness, guiding them to worship Allah, teaching what is beneficial, and spreading truth.
- Forbidding evil (nahy ‘anil munkar): Warning others from wrongdoing, injustice, disbelief, innovations, or harmful practices.
- Remembrance of Allah (dhikr): Praising Allah, reciting His names, remembering His commands, and keeping one’s heart alive with His words.
All of these exceptions benefit a person in the Hereafter because they connect him to Allah’s message. Remembering Allah itself protects the believer from heedlessness, reminding him of His commands and prohibitions. This becomes a shield, not only against sins but also against disbelief and neglect. Thus, even though every word is written against a person, when he uses his tongue in the right way, it turns into his own benefit and reward.
