Women’s Right to Attend the Mosque

📖Sahih Muslim 442 c
Ibn ‘Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not prevent the maid-servants of Allah from going to the mosque.”

Explanation:

This Hadith is a command to men not to forbid women from attending the mosque. During the Prophet’s ﷺ time, women did attend prayers – modestly, without intermixing, and with a purpose – to worship, not socialize or display, However, the hadith doesn’t make it obligatory for women to attend the mosque. In fact, in many other narrations, the Prophet ﷺ said that a woman’s prayer at home is better than her prayer in the mosque – not because the mosque is bad, but to protect her honor, comfort, and modesty.

What We Learn Today:

In today’s world – with:

  • Widespread immorality
  • Public spaces filled with fitnah (temptations)
  • No proper segregation or spiritual environment in many places

…it is safer, more dignified, and spiritually better for women to pray at home. But that doesn’t mean going to the mosque is haram – it just means the home remains a preferred place of worship for women.

Islam gave women the right to go, but also gave them a superior alternative.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 9:18
The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakah, and fear none except Allah. It is they who are expected to be upon guidance.”
This verse includes all believers, not just men. Women who believe, pray, and give zakah are part of this group – and therefore have the right to be in Allah’s house like men, as long as they observe modesty and proper conduct.

📖Quran 24:31
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze, guard their chastity, and not to display their adornment except what is apparent…”
This verse outlines the foundation of modesty and dignity for believing women. It guides how women should appear in public, which ties into the wisdom behind preferring home-based worship in today’s climate.
