Hadith on Women: Raising Daughters in Islam

📖Sahih Muslim 2631
Malik reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: “He who brought up two girls properly until they grew up – he and I will be together like this on the Day of Resurrection, and he interlaced his fingers to show closeness.

📖Sunan Ibn Majah 3669
The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever has three daughters or three sisters, and he keeps good company with them and fears Allah regarding them, then Paradise is for him.”

📖Sunan Ibn Majah 3669
The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) say: Whoever has three daughters and is patient towards them, and feeds them, gives them to drink, and clothes them from his wealth; they will be a shield for him from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.'”

Description:

This hadith emphasizes the immense reward and high status of raising daughters in Islam. At a time when pre-Islamic Arabs used to bury baby girls alive out of shame, the Prophet ﷺ completely reversed that mindset – declaring that raising two girls with love, care, and proper education can bring a person close to him in the Hereafter, The image of the Prophet ﷺ interlacing his fingers is powerful – it shows extreme closeness, almost as if no separation will exist between him and that person on the Day of Judgment.

Why Not More Than Three? Why Two or Three?

The Prophet ﷺ never prohibited having more than three daughters – but in hadith, he consistently mentioned two or three. Why?

  • Because two or three is the realistic maximum for most men to provide proper Islamic care, emotional attention, and financial support.
  • These numbers are not random – they reflect the highest level of responsibility most men can truly handle without falling into injustice.
  • It’s not a sin to have more than three, but:
  • If you neglect their Islamic rights,
  • Fail to raise them with taqwa, education, and dignity,
  • Or treat one better than the others —
    you are accountable before Allah.

So Islam highlighted two or three not to restrict you – but to warn you, Don’t take on more than you can fulfill, In today’s world, where some still favor sons, and girls are seen as “less useful” or “financial burdens” – this hadith is a direct correction of that mindset, Having two or three daughters today is not a problem – it’s an opportunity for Jannah, Islam doesn’t just tolerate daughters – it celebrates them. Raising daughters with care and faith is a source of status in this world and nearness to the Prophet ﷺ in the next.

Raising Daughters Doesn’t Cancel All Sins

Just because the Prophet ﷺ said that raising two or three daughters leads to Paradise, it does not mean:

  • You can live in sin and expect Jannah just because you have daughters.
  • You can abuse, neglect, or exploit others and hide behind your role as a parent.

What it means is:
Raising daughters with sincere care, taqwa, patience, and responsibility is such a noble act in Islam that it can:

  • Wipe out lesser sins you’ve done unknowingly or due to human weakness.
  • Elevate your rank in Jannah if you’ve lived a decent life but fell short in some areas.
  • Serve as a means of purification – just like prayer, fasting, and sadaqah.

But major sins, arrogance, injustice, or hypocrisy? No amount of parenting can clean that unless you repent and return to Allah.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 81:8–9
“And when the girl who was buried alive is asked: For what sin was she killed?”
This verse condemns the practice of devaluing daughters. Islam came to honor them – and these hadiths fulfill that mission.

📖Quran 6:151
“…Do not kill your children for fear of poverty — We provide for you and for them.”
This reminds us that raising children, especially girls, is a trust and a path to reward — not a burden.

📖Quran 16:58–59
When one of them is given the news of a female (child), his face darkens, and he is filled with grief… he hides himself from the people out of shame… Should he keep her in humiliation or bury her in the dust?
This verse exposes the emotional injustice of the old mindset – and Islam came to erase it with compassion, protection, and eternal reward for raising daughters.
