Dedication to Women’s Education

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 7310
Narrated Abu Sa`id: A woman came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Men (only) benefit by your teachings, so please devote to us from (some of) your time, a day on which we may come to you so that you may teach us of what Allah has taught you. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Gather on such-and-such a day at such-and-such a place. They gathered, and Allah’s Messenger ﷺ came to them and taught them what Allah had taught him. Then he said: “No woman among you who has lost her three children (died) but that they will screen her from the Fire, A woman among them asked, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! (What) if she lost two children? He replied: “Even two, even two, even two!”

Description:
This hadith illustrates two powerful lessons:

  1. The eagerness of women to learn Islam directly from the Prophet ﷺ – and how the Prophet responded with respect and gave them special time for education, showing that Islam promotes knowledge for both men and women.
  2. The immense reward for the patience of a mother who loses her children – her children will serve as a shield from Hellfire due to her patience and the test she endured.

This shows the Prophet’s ﷺ deep compassion and the high status Islam gives to both women and mothers.

What We Learn Today:

  • Women have a right to seek Islamic knowledge and should be given space, time, and respect in religious learning.
  • Islamic education is for all, not just for men – and the Prophet ﷺ personally ensured women got access to learning.
  • The loss of a child is one of the most painful trials, but Islam turns it into a potential path to Paradise through patience and trust in Allah.
  • This also shows that Allah’s mercy is vast – even losing two children becomes a means of forgiveness and protection from the Hellfire.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 9:71
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, establish prayer, give zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have mercy upon them.
Islam grants spiritual equality to men and women – and both are responsible for learning, acting, and spreading righteousness.

📖Quran 2:155–156
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient. Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.”
This directly reflects the trial of losing a child – and promises reward for patience.

📖Quran 64:11
No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah—He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.

But it’s important to understand: not every disaster is a direct “test from Allah” in the sense that He causes it. Rather, many disasters happen because of human choices – and Allah permits their consequences to unfold in this world of free will. That doesn’t mean Allah wanted the evil to happen – it means He gave humans the ability to choose, and some people choose evil over good. If Allah stopped every act of evil, free will would be meaningless, and the Day of Judgment unnecessary.

  • Quran 76:3
Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or ungrateful (i.e., believer or disbeliever).
This means every human has the choice – to do good or evil — and the consequences follow those decisions.
  • Quran 18:29
And say, “The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills—let him believe; and whoever wills—let him disbelieve.”
Allah gives the freedom – but humans are responsible for what they choose.

So when a tragedy happens, especially due to someone’s wrongdoing (like corruption, war, or injustice), we cannot blame Allah. The evil wasn’t ordained by Him – it was allowed in this world where humans are being tested through their own choices. But for the believer who is harmed by these events, Allah promises guidance, healing, and immense reward.

Summary:
This hadith proves that women in Islam have a right to education, and the Prophet ﷺ ensured their needs were met with care. It also shows how severe trials, like the death of a child, are not meaningless in Islam – they become causes for eternal reward. The believer, especially a mother, is never forgotten in her pain – her patience becomes her path to Paradise.
