Do Not Curse the Wind, for It Is Directed by Allah
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1978
Ibn Abbas reported: A man once cursed the wind in front of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet replied, “Do not curse the wind, for it only acts as it was commanded. Whoever curses anything that does not deserve it, the curse will return upon him.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught that the wind is not an independent force but moves only by Allah’s command. People often react emotionally to natural events like storms or strong winds, but these occurrences are not random. Just as one sets an alarm and it rings at the appointed time, the wind is already decreed to blow in a certain way at a specific moment. Allah’s command does not always mean a living entity is making choices; rather, it reflects divine will already destined to happen. This hadith reminds believers to avoid misplaced anger and to recognize the wisdom of Allah in every event of nature.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 30:48
It is Allah Who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds, then He spreads them in the sky however He wills, and He makes them fragments, so you see the rain emerge from within them. Then when He causes it to fall upon whom He wills of His servants, they rejoice.
📖Quran 45:5
And in the alternation of the night and day, and in the provision Allah sends down from the sky by which He revives the earth after its death, and in the changing of the winds, are signs for a people who reason.
📖Quran 41:16
So We unleashed upon them a furious wind during days of misfortune, to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgraceful, and they will not be helped.
