Patience and Avoiding Conflict

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 3026
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not wish to meet the enemy, but when you meet (them), be patient.”

Description:

This hadith is not just about warfare – it’s a universal teaching of restraint and patience. Islam doesn’t promote confrontation or aggression. Instead, it discourages even the desire to face enemies, because such desires often come from arrogance, pride, or revenge, not from justice or wisdom.

  1. “Do not wish to meet the enemy”

    • Islam doesn’t allow a believer to seek conflict – even if the other side has shown hatred.

    • This includes not hoping to confront someone who hates Muslims, as that may lead to unnecessary arguments, hostility, or violence.

    • Wishing for confrontation could reveal ego or a desire to dominate –  both are spiritually dangerous.

  2. “But if you do meet…”

    • If confrontation happens by necessity (like war, injustice, or unexpected harm), then the believer is to show sabr (patience) and firmness, not panic or emotional reaction.

    • The meeting here implies defensive necessity, not personal provocation.

  • Islam Doesn’t Glorify War:
  • Islam allows defensive battle only when injustice is clear.
  • The Prophet ﷺ never glorified war – he grieved over it and always tried peace first.

  • Quranic Context:

📖Quran 2:216
“Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you…”
➡ It shows that fighting is a last resort, even if sometimes needed — never desired.

📖Quran 8:61
“And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah.”
➡ Peace is always the first option in Islam — war is secondary and conditional.

📖Quran 60:8
“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes — from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
➡ Even non-Muslims who don’t show hostility should be treated with justice and kindness.
