A Virtuous Charity in Islam

📖Sahih Muslim 2568 b
Thauban, the freed slave of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He who visits the sick continues to remain in the fruit garden of Paradise until he returns.”

What Does This Really Mean?

This hadith doesn’t just talk about walking into a hospital room and leaving. It refers to a deep, sincere act of care, where:

  • You visit someone because of Allah, not for gossip or drama
  • You bring comfort, support, and hope to the ill person
  • You remind them of patience, prayer, and reward from Allah
  • You fulfill your Islamic duty of community care and empathy
  • You make dua for them, and help physically or emotionally
  • You do all this without showing off or expecting anything in return

Such a person – who lives the teachings of Islam with sincerity – is said to be in the gardens of Paradise during the visit. That is a spiritual state – a glimpse of the reward that awaits in the Hereafter.

The Deeper Meaning: It’s Not Just the Visit

This reward only holds value when the person already lives by Islamic teachings:

  • Guards their prayers
  • Avoids major sins
  • Is humble and generous
  • Is sincere in intention

It’s not a reward for someone living in hypocrisy or arrogance who casually visits someone to feel good.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 76:8-9
They give food — despite their love for it – to the needy, the orphan, and the captive. [Saying,] “We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We want neither reward nor thanks from you.”

📖Quran 90:12-16
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult path? It is the freeing of a slave, or feeding in a day of severe hunger – an orphan near of kin, or a needy person in misery.

📖Quran 49:10
The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

✅ Summary:

Visiting the sick is more than just a physical act.
It’s a spiritual service — a test of your intention, compassion, and sincerity.
And for those who do it for Allah alone, they walk in the “gardens of Paradise” — even before they die.
