Even Minor Secession Removes One from Islam
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4758
Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever secedes from the community as much as a handspan has thrown the yoke of Islam off of his neck.
Description
This hadith emphasizes the importance of remaining part of the Muslim community. Even a small act of separating oneself from the collective body of believers can have serious spiritual consequences. The phrase “as much as a handspan” highlights that even minor secession or division is significant.
Meaning
- Secession or detachment from the Muslim community is akin to removing oneself from the framework of Islam.
- Islam is not only about personal faith but also about social cohesion, unity, and collective obedience.
- This does not refer to minor disagreements in opinions, but actively withdrawing or isolating oneself from communal obligations and collective responsibility.
What We Learn Today
- Stay Connected: Being part of the Muslim community strengthens faith and protects against misguidance.
- Avoid Isolation: Withdrawing from the Ummah can lead to spiritual vulnerability.
- Minor Acts Matter: Even small separations, divisions, or disobedience that isolate one from the community can weaken faith.
- Modern Application: Avoid sectarianism, extreme individualism in religion, or ignoring communal obligations like Friday prayers, zakah, and supporting the Ummah.
Qur’an Verses as Context
📖Quran 3:103

And remember the favor of Allah upon you—when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.”
📖Quran 49:10
“The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.”
📖Quran 8:46
“And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and thus lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”
