Importance of verifying information

📖Sahih Muslim 5
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: It is enough of a lie for a man to narrate everything he hears.”

Description:
This hadith is a powerful warning from the Prophet ﷺ against spreading information carelessly. Islam teaches that truthfulness is not just about avoiding lies – it also includes being responsible with what we pass on to others. If someone repeats everything they hear without verifying it, they risk spreading falsehood, even if unintentionally. That, in itself, is blameworthy.

Common Question:
“Then why did Imam al-Bukhari collect thousands of narrations – didn’t he write down everything he heard?”

Answer:
Imam al-Bukhari did not claim that all he recorded were authentic (sahih). He was a scholar of great precision. He collected narrations for different purposes – some to analyze, some to compare, some to show chains of transmission. In his famous Sahih al-Bukhari, he only included narrations that passed his strict criteria of authenticity. Other compilations (like al-Adab al-Mufrad) may contain weaker reports, but they were preserved for scholars to verify – not for blind acceptance.

Just like a scientist collects all data before filtering what is valid, scholars of hadith gathered all reports to sift through them based on chain (isnad), content (matn), and narrator reliability. Imam Muslim and Imam Bukhari worked to protect the Ummah from exactly what this hadith warns against – spreading unverified speech.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 49:6
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, verify it, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.”
This verse commands verification before spreading information – especially when it concerns others or religion. It complements the hadith perfectly.

What We Learn:

  • Don’t share every hadith or quote without checking authenticity.
  • Be responsible with information – especially Islamic knowledge.
  • Even great scholars collected data to examine, not to promote falsehood.
  • Truth requires effort, not just repetition.
