Allah expiates sins through calamities
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 5640
Narrated `Aisha (the wife of the Prophet ﷺ): Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn.”
Description:
This hadith shows that every hardship a Muslim faces – no matter how small – can lead to the forgiveness of sins, as long as the believer remains patient. Even something as minor as being pricked by a thorn becomes a means of spiritual purification. This highlights Allah’s mercy in turning painful moments into opportunities for reward.
Types of Calamities:
- Natural disasters (earthquakes, floods)
- Death of a loved one
- Poverty or financial loss
- Illness or injury
- Injustice, war, or displacement
- Emotional pain or betrayal
- Any small daily struggle – even tiredness, stress, or humiliation
Important Note:
Not every calamity is directly decreed as a punishment or a specific act by Allah – but nothing happens without His permission. Every hardship is either:
- A test to raise the believer’s rank
- A means of purification to erase sins
- Or, in some cases, a form of punishment due to disobedience
The hadith clearly includes all forms of calamity – whether it’s a natural disaster like an earthquake (by Allah’s will), or a hardship caused by human choice, like war, poverty, betrayal, or even something as small as a thorn prick. All of these can become a source of forgiveness for the believer if faced with patience, Whether it is a test or punishment depends on the individual’s state, intentions, and actions – and only Allah truly knows the reason behind each event in every person’s life.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 2:155
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
— Trials are a natural part of life meant to test faith and patience.
📖Quran 64:11
No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah — He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.
— Even though the hardship occurs, Allah guides those who respond with faith.
📖Quran 4:79
Whatever good happens to you is from Allah, and whatever bad happens to you is from yourself.
— This shows that some calamities are due to human error or sin, not necessarily a direct punishment from Allah, but a consequence.
📖Quran 94:5-6
So, indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.
— Every trial is accompanied by relief – double assurance from Allah.
Conclusion:
Hardships in this world have purpose. Whether Allah allows them as a test, or they come as a consequence of sins, every believer can turn the pain into forgiveness through patience. No struggle is wasted. Even a thorn prick can wash away sins. The wise are those who reflect, repent, and remain steadfast – knowing that behind every pain, there may be divine mercy.
