Humiliation of unjust rulers on Judgment Day
📖Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1738
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Every treacherous liar will have a banner raised over him on the Day of Resurrection, according to the measure of his betrayal. Surely, there is no greater betrayal than that committed by a ruler over the common people.
Description:
This powerful hadith warns about the grave consequences of being a treacherous liar – one who not only lies but does so with betrayal and deception, breaking trust. On the Day of Resurrection, such a person will be publicly exposed and shamed; a banner of their betrayal will be raised above them for all to see, marking their sin openly.
-
What Does It Mean?
- The hadith applies only to those who knowingly and intentionally commit treacherous lying.
- If someone lies or errs unintentionally, by mistake, or under compulsion, this severe accountability does not apply to them.
- Islam recognizes human fallibility and emphasizes Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for those who sincerely repent or who sin unknowingly.
📖Quran 4:17
“Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance or by mistake and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.”
This verse confirms that sins committed unknowingly, by mistake, or out of forgetfulness are forgiven by Allah when one sincerely repents promptly. Therefore, the severe punishment mentioned in the hadith applies only to those who lie and betray knowingly and intentionally, not to those who err unintentionally.
What We Learn From It Today:
- Honesty and trustworthiness are fundamental in Islam; betrayal and lying destroy relationships and social cohesion.
- Lying with intent to deceive, especially in matters where trust is placed (contracts, promises, testimonies), is a severe sin with dire consequences in the Hereafter.
- Muslims must strive to be truthful in all dealings and avoid breaking trust.
- This hadith serves as a stern reminder that no sin remains hidden; all will be revealed and judged by Allah.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 49:12
“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.”
— Emphasizes avoiding harmful speech and actions that betray trust.
📖Quran 24:7
“And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and do not bring four witnesses—lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept their testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient.”
— Highlights the severity of false accusations and lying.
📖Quran 3:61
“And whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you—say, ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars.
— Shows the strong condemnation of lying.
