Punishment for Usurping Land
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 2453
Narrated Abu Salama: There was a dispute between him and some people about a piece of land. When he told ʿAisha (رضي الله عنها) about it, she said, O Abu Salama! Avoid taking the land unjustly, for the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Whoever usurps even one span of land wrongfully, his neck will be encircled with it down the seven earths.’”
Explanation:
- Severe Warning Against Land Injustice:
The Prophet ﷺ warns that even stealing a tiny portion of land unjustly will have grave consequences on the Day of Judgment. The person will be burdened by that stolen land – wrapped around his neck, dragging him down through seven earths. - “Encircled with it down the seven earths” – What Does That Mean?
- It’s a metaphor for intense punishment.
- It shows how deep and serious the sin is – not just physical, but spiritual and cosmic in weight.
- The “seven earths” could refer to actual geological layers, spiritual realms, or even alternate Earths (multiverse).
- Aisha’s Advice Reflects Early Muslim Ethics:
She immediately warns Abu Salama to stay away from injustice, showing that the early Muslims had deep fear of Allah’s punishment, even in small property disputes.
What We Learn:
- Taking someone’s land, property, or rights unjustly is a MAJOR sin.
- Islamic justice protects even a small piece of land – no corruption, no bribes, no tricks.
- Allah’s punishment is not limited to worldly laws – He holds people accountable across the seven earths.
- Fear Allah, not court documents or legal loopholes.
Scientific Reflections: Proving “Seven Earths”
The hadith mentions “seven earths” – the same phrase also appears in the Qur’an.
📖Quran 65:12
“Allah is He who created seven heavens, and of the earth, the like thereof…”
This confirms the existence of seven ‘earths’ similar to ours.
Now, science doesn’t confirm this exactly yet – but it gives us three major possibilities:
1. Seven Geological Layers of Earth (Confirmed)
Modern geology divides the Earth into seven major layers:
- Crust
- Upper Mantle
- Lower Mantle
- Outer Core
- Inner Core
- Lithosphere
- Asthenosphere
These 7 layers could reflect the “seven earths” mentioned – in a physical, scientific sense.
2. Multiverse Theory (Most Mysterious)
Some scholars and thinkers suggest “seven earths” could refer to seven parallel Earths in alternate universes, aligning with modern multiverse theories:
- Quantum multiverse – every decision splits reality.
- Bubble universe – each universe in a cosmic foam.
- String/brane theory – multiple universes in higher dimensions.
This supports the idea of parallel worlds – a concept now explored by theoretical physics.
Qur’anic Context
📖Quran 65:12
“Allah is He Who created seven heavens and of the earth, the like thereof…”
→ Confirms the existence of seven earths, not just one. The word “mithlahunna” means similar to – indicating each Earth may be like ours in some way.
📖Quran 78:6-7
“Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs?”
→ The Qur’an often reminds us of Earth’s structure and design, hinting at layers and order.
📖Quran 2:188
“Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, nor give bribes to the rulers to consume a portion of others’ wealth unlawfully while you know.”
→ This verse connects directly with the sin of land usurpation – Allah warns of using power or tricks to take what isn’t yours.
