📖Sahih Muslim 2858
Mustawrid, brother of Bani Fihr, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “By Allah, the life of this world compared to the Hereafter is like if one of you were to dip his finger into the ocean – let him see what returns on it. (Yahya pointed with his forefinger to demonstrate.)
This hadith was narrated through five different chains with minor wording differences, but the core message is the same.
Explanation:
- Drastic Contrast Between Dunya and Akhirah:
The Prophet ﷺ is teaching how insignificant this world is compared to the Hereafter. He swears by Allah — the strongest oath – that all of worldly life is like a drop of water compared to an entire ocean. - The “Finger Dip” Metaphor:
He gives a visual example:
- Dip your finger into the sea —
- Look at what sticks when you pull it out —
That tiny drop is this world.
The entire ocean represents the Akhirah (Hereafter).
- Yahya’s Action:
The narrator physically pointed with his finger, showing this was meant to make people visualize and never forget how little the dunya really is.
How the “Finger Dip” Applies Today (Examples):
Imagine comparing the dunya (this world) to the Akhirah like:
| What You Dip | What You Get | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Your finger in the ocean | A few drops | Dunya = Temporary pleasures |
| One moment of fame | Forgotten quickly | Akhirah = Eternal legacy |
| 70 years of life | Ends in the grave | Akhirah = Infinite timeline |
| A luxury car | Becomes junk | Akhirah = Permanent home |
| Social media likes | Fade in hours | Akhirah = Deeds never disappear |
No matter how big something feels in this life – its value is only a “drop”, while the Akhirah is an endless ocean of reality.
What We Learn:
- Don’t be impressed by dunya’s glitter – it fades quickly.
- Work for the Hereafter more than this world.
- Keep dunya in your hand, not your heart.
- Remind yourself: Every fame, wealth, or power today is just a wet fingertip – nothing more.
Qur’anic Context:
📖Quran 57:20
“Know that the life of this world is but amusement, diversion, adornment, boasting among you, and competition in wealth and children — like the example of rain whose plant growth pleases the farmers, but then it dries and you see it turn yellow; then it becomes [dry] debris…”
→ Dunya is temporary, flashy, but quickly fades away.
📖Quran 29:64
“This worldly life is nothing but diversion and play. Verily, the Home of the Hereafter — that is the [true] life, if only they knew.”
→ Echoes the exact meaning of the hadith: Dunya is a distraction, not the real thing.
📖Quran 6:32
“And the worldly life is nothing but amusement and play. But the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah. Will you not then understand?”
→ Again, Allah compares dunya to a game, and Akhirah to the real reward.
