Sovereignty of Allah over Human Hearts
šSahih Muslim 2655
Abdullah b. Amr b. al-āAs reported: The Messenger of Allah ļ·ŗ said: Verily, the hearts of all the children of Adam are between two fingers of the fingers of the Compassionate Lord as one heart. He turns it in whichever direction He wills, Then the Prophet ļ·ŗ said: O Allah, Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts toward Your obedience.”
What It Means:
- Hearts under Allah’s Absolute Control:
This hadith teaches that every human heart is under Allahās complete control. He can guide or misguide as He wills – not based on luck, but on His wisdom and justice. - āFingers of the Compassionateā – Not Literal:
The hadith uses the phrase “two fingers of the Compassionate”, but:
- This is not literal.
- It’s symbolic language to describe Allah’s power and control, not a human-like hand.
šQuran 42:11
“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
So we affirm the words without imagining, describing, or resembling Allah to creation.
- All Hearts Like One in His Grip:
The phrase āas one heartā means that itās effortless for Allah to change hearts – like turning one object. This shows how easily people can be guided or misguided. - Even the Prophet ļ·ŗ Made Duāa:
He ļ·ŗ said:
“O Turner of hearts, turn our hearts to Your obedience.”
This shows that even the most guided heart needs protection. No one is safe without Allahās help – not even the Prophet.
What We Learn Today:
- Never be arrogant about your faith – it could change overnight.
- Always make duāa for a firm, obedient heart.
- If someone is misguided, donāt mock – Allah can flip hearts any moment.
- You canāt guide yourself or others without Allahās permission.
- True stability comes from seeking Allah, not your own intelligence or effort alone.
Quranic Context:
šQuran 3:8
“Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. Truly, You are the Giver of Gifts.”
This shows that even after guidance, a heart can turn away if not protected by Allah.
šQuran 14:27
“Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah leads the wrongdoers astray. And Allah does what He wills.”
Allah alone makes hearts firm or lets them fall. This mirrors the hadith message.
šQuran 6:110
“We will turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), as they refused to believe in it the first time. And We will leave them in their transgression, blindly wandering.”
If someone knowingly rejects the truth, their heart may be turned permanently -a consequence of arrogance.
