Satan Exaggerates His Status

📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4806
“Abdullah ibn Shikhir reported: I proceeded with the delegation of the tribe of ‘Amir to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. We said, ‘You are our master.’ The Prophet said, ‘The Master is Allah Almighty.’ We said, ‘You are the best and greatest among us.’ The Prophet said, ‘Say what you have to say, or part of it, but do not take Satan as a guardian.'”

Description:

  • This hadith emphasizes that ultimate authority and mastery belong only to Allah.
  • People may honor a teacher, leader, or scholar as a “master” in terms of knowledge or skill, but no one can be a master in the sense of absolute control or authority – that is reserved for Allah alone.
  • The Prophet ﷺ corrected the delegation to prevent excessive reverence or misplaced loyalty, which could lead to blind following or taking guidance from someone other than Allah.

Meaning:

  • Calling someone a “master” in terms of skill, knowledge, or guidance is permissible, as long as it does not contradict Allah’s authority or law.
  • Respect for a teacher or judge is allowed when it is based on Allah’s guidance and justice, but ultimate judgment and mastery remain with Allah.
  • The Prophet ﷺ did not accept the title “master” for himself in this context to avoid idolizing him or replacing Allah as the ultimate authority.

What We Learn Today:

  • Honor teachers, scholars, or leaders for their knowledge, skill, or guidance, but do not give them ultimate authority.
  • Always measure advice or judgment against the Qur’an and Sunnah.
  • Misplacing loyalty or authority can lead to spiritual harm or following false guidance, which the Prophet ﷺ warned against.

Qur’anic Context:

📖Qur’an 3:26
“Say, ‘O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will…'”

Allah is the true Master of all authority, reinforcing that no human can hold ultimate control.

📖Qur’an 6:57
“Say, ‘Indeed, I am only a warner, and there is not any deity except Allah, the One, the Prevailing.'”

Even the Prophet ﷺ is a messenger and guide, not the ultimate master; authority belongs to Allah alone.

📖Qur’an 2:2
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”

All leadership and judgment must align with the guidance of Allah, not personal preference or human authority alone.
