Supplication at the End of Prayer
📖Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3370, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 406
Ka’b ibn ‘Urjah reported: We asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how do we send blessings upon you and the people of the house? Allah has taught us how to send peace upon you.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Say: O Allah, send grace upon Muhammad and the house of Muhammad, just as You have sent grace upon Abraham and the house of Abraham. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Majestic. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the house of Muhammad, just as You have blessed Abraham and the house of Abraham. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Majestic.
This hadith shows that sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and his family is an act of obedience to Allah’s command. It does not add anything to the honor of the Prophet ﷺ or his family, as Allah has already elevated them. Rather, it benefits the believer by showing love for the Prophet ﷺ, strengthening faith, and earning reward with Allah. It is a way of purifying our own hearts and affirming loyalty to the Messenger.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 33:56
Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, send blessings upon him and peace with full respect.
Sending blessings is thus a deed commanded by Allah, showing love, respect, and gratitude for the Prophet ﷺ. It is not about increasing his status – Allah has already given him the highest station—but about perfecting our own faith and following Allah’s command.
📖Quran 59:7
And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
📖Quran 4:80
Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah. But those who turn away – We have not sent you over them as a guardian.
So when a believer sends blessings, it is not a favor to the Prophet ﷺ – it is a means of drawing closer to Allah through obedience, love, and respect, This shows that sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ is an act of love, obedience to Allah’s command, and a way of keeping his Sunnah alive in our hearts. It does not increase the status of the Prophet or his family – for they are already honored by Allah = but it benefits the believer, purifying their own heart and reminding them to follow his example.
