The Prophet Commands the Removal of All Charms

📖Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3005, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2115
“Abu Bashir reported: He was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in one of his travels. The Prophet sent a messenger, saying, ‘Do not leave a stringed necklace upon a camel, or any necklace, but that you cut it off.’ Malik said, ‘I think they were for protection from the evil eye.’

Description:

  • This hadith addresses the practice of placing amulets, necklaces, or charms on camels or animals, believed to protect them from the evil eye or theft.
  • The Prophet ﷺ instructed that these items should be removed, showing that reliance on charms for protection is not permitted.

Meaning:

  • The hadith teaches that protection comes from Allah, not objects or charms.
  • The “evil eye” concept refers to harm caused by jealousy or envy, which was commonly feared in pre-Islamic times.

Contemporary Lesson:

  • In today’s world, society and security have changed, but risk still exists (e.g., theft, accidents).
  • Islam encourages practical and lawful measures (like locking gates, insurance, security systems) instead of relying on superstitions.
  • True reliance should always be on Allah, while taking sensible precautions according to societal norms.

📖Qur’an 113:1–5
“Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of daybreak, From the evil of that which He created, From the evil of darkness when it settles, From the evil of those who practice witchcraft, And from the evil of the envier when he envies.”

This verse shows Islam teaches seeking protection from Allah, not relying on charms or amulets.
