No Permission to Violate Rights of the People of the Book
📖Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3050
The Messenger of Allah ï·º said: No doubt, by Allah, I have admonished you, commanded you, and prohibited you from things like those in the Quran or even more. Verily, Allah Almighty has not made it lawful for you to enter the houses of the People of the Book without their permission, nor strike their women, nor eat from their fruits if they give you what is due upon them. – (Agreed upon)
Explanation:
-
Not entering houses without permission:
Islam emphasizes respect for privacy and property. Muslims are prohibited from entering the homes of non-Muslims without their consent, reflecting good manners and respect for others’ rights. -
Not striking their women:
Islam forbids harming anyone unjustly, including the women of non-Muslims. This shows the importance of kindness and justice in social interactions beyond religious boundaries. -
Eating from their fruits if they give what is due upon them:
Muslims may eat from the fruits or produce of the People of the Book only if these fruits have fulfilled their lawful dues – meaning they are free from unlawful (haram) sources or obligations have been fulfilled by the owners, ensuring the food is permissible.
Quranic Context:
📖Surah An-Nur 24:27
“O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants. That is best for you; perhaps you will be reminded.”
- This verse stresses asking permission before entering someone’s home, which applies to everyone, including non-Muslims.
📖Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:8
“Allah does not forbid you from being righteous and just toward those who have not fought you because of religion and have not expelled you from your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
-
This verse highlights the command to treat non-Muslims with justice and kindness if they live peacefully.
📖Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:5
“This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them.”
