Innovated deeds of worship are rejected
📖Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1718
Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever performs a deed that is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected.
This hadith from Aisha refers to any deed – religious or ritual – that is invented, altered, or added without basis in the teachings of the Prophet ï·º and the Qur’an. It applies to acts of worship, religious rulings, or rituals that were never taught or approved by the Prophet ï·º.
Examples of such deeds:
- Celebrating any prophet’s birthday, including the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ, because he never ordered it and his companions never practiced it.
- Allowing modern forms of songs or music as part of religion, especially when presented as acts of worship or spiritual gatherings – these can lead into a bad direction but never in a truly good path.
- Introducing new prayer methods or changing the wording taught by the Prophet ï·º.
- Adding extra fasting days as an obligation when Allah and His Messenger did not make them obligatory.
- Inventing new forms of dhikr that change the prophetic method or wording.
- Altering Islamic rulings on inheritance, marriage, or hijab to suit personal or cultural preferences.
What we learn today:
We must judge every religious act against the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. Good intentions alone are not enough — sincerity must be paired with correct practice. Islam is already complete, so adding or changing is actually distorting it.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 5:3
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion. But whoever is forced by extreme hunger with no inclination to sin—then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Islam is already perfected; adding new religious acts implies imperfection, which contradicts this verse.
📖Quran 59:7
And whatever the Messenger gives you—take it; and whatever he forbids you—refrain from it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
Following the Messenger ï·º is the measure for what is acceptable in religion.
📖Quran 42:21
Or do they have partners who have legislated for them in religion that which Allah has not permitted? But if not for the decisive word, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed, the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.
Inventing religious practices is akin to making laws without Allah’s permission, which is a grave wrong.
