Do not dispute with the Prophet

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2679
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Leave me with what I have left for you. When I narrate a saying to you, take it from me. Verily, those before you were only ruined because they excessively interrogated and disputed their prophets.”

Description:
This hadith highlights the importance of accepting and following the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ without unnecessary questioning, disputing, or overcomplicating his guidance. The Prophet ﷺ advises his followers to adhere to what he leaves behind – his sayings (hadith), practices (sunnah), and teachings – as a complete and sufficient way of life. Excessive questioning or disputing, as happened with earlier communities, can lead to confusion, division, and ultimately ruin.

The hadith serves as a warning against skepticism that causes doubt or rejection of clear guidance and emphasizes trust and submission to the Prophet’s instructions.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 59:7
“And whatever the Messenger has given you — take; and what he has forbidden you — refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.”

This verse commands believers to accept and act upon whatever the Prophet ﷺ brings, reinforcing the hadith’s message to take his sayings and avoid unnecessary dispute.

📖Quran 4:80
“He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but those who turn away — We have not sent you over them as a guardian.”

Obedience to the Prophet ﷺ is directly linked to obedience to Allah. Rejecting or disputing his teachings is equivalent to rejecting Allah’s command, which can lead to misguidance.

Together, the hadith and these Quranic verses emphasize the critical importance of accepting the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ teachings as the final and complete guidance. Excessive questioning or disputing the Sunnah can lead to division and destruction, as experienced by previous communities. True faith involves trusting the Prophet’s guidance, following his example, and submitting sincerely to Allah’s commands through him.
