The Importance of Faith and Steadfastness
📖Sahih Muslim 38
It is narrated on the authority of Sufyan bin ‘Abdullah al-Thaqafi that he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to tell me about Islam – a statement that would spare me from asking anyone else after you. The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Say, ‘I believe in Allah,’ and then remain steadfast.”
Description:
This hadith gives a powerful and complete summary of Islam in just two steps:
- Affirm your belief in Allah – meaning have sincere, unshakable faith in His existence, His Oneness, and His authority.
- Remain steadfast – meaning stay consistent in obedience, worship, character, and patience through all situations — even when it’s hard.
The Prophet ﷺ didn’t overload the man with rules or long speeches. He gave him a core foundation: faith with action, belief with commitment.
What We Learn From It Today:
In today’s world full of distractions, pressure, and doubts, this hadith reminds us:
- Faith isn’t just saying you believe — it’s living like you believe.
- True Islam is consistency — praying even when tired, staying honest even when others lie, lowering your gaze even when others don’t.
- You don’t need to follow everyone’s opinion. Just believe in Allah and stick to the path — that’s enough to guide you.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 41:30
Indeed, those who say, “Our Lord is Allah” and then remain steadfast — the angels will descend upon them, [saying], “Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good news of Paradise, which you were promised.”
This verse is the direct reflection of the hadith: declare your Lord, stay firm, and Paradise is the reward.
