Avoiding Fault-finding in Others

📖Sunan Abi Dawud 4888
Narrated Mu’awiyah: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “If you search for the faults of the people, you will corrupt them, or will nearly corrupt them.” Abud-Darda’ said: “These are the words which Mu’awiyah heard himself from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and Allah benefited him by them.”

Description:
This Hadith carries a deep ethical warning: constantly seeking out and exposing others’ faults creates corruption in society and damages relationships. The Prophet ﷺ discouraged fault-finding because it breeds suspicion, arrogance, and backbiting. Instead of reforming people, it often leads to humiliation, resentment, and social disorder. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized personal accountability, not policing others’ private flaws. Abud-Darda’ noted how Mu’awiyah benefitted from this advice—meaning he refrained from becoming someone who hunted for people’s mistakes.

When It’s Right to Speak Against Wrong Publicly:

  • If the wrong is public (e.g. promoting indecency, mocking religion, encouraging haram)
  • You’re not naming or humiliating individuals
  • You’re calling to truth, not seeking arguments or clout
  • You’re trying to protect others from being influenced

Example:
Sunan Abi Dawud 4788: The Prophet ﷺ stood on the pulpit and corrected wrongs openly, saying: “Why do some people do such-and-such?” – without naming them.

But What You Must Avoid:

  • Don’t indirectly expose someone with obvious clues. That’s still backbiting.
  • Don’t act self-righteous – speak with humility and concern.
  • Don’t generalize too harshly. Say: “This behavior is wrong” not “You all are evil” – there’s a big difference.

But when necessary, we can speak clearly and directly against evil, but:

  • We don’t say: “He is evil” or “All are corrupt”
  • We say: “Some people are promoting wrong – like porn, nudity, immorality – and it’s harmful”

This keeps the focus on the action, not attacking the individual also sometimes people say or do wrong out of ignorance or mistake, not rebellion. That’s where Allah’s mercy comes in.

📖Quran 4:17
Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil ignorantly or carelessly and then repent soon after. It is they to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

This means: If someone promotes wrong – like indecency or false speech – but they did it out of ignorance, emotion, or influence, and they realize and repent, Allah will forgive them, But always try to avoid it. And if you do something by mistake – like saying a bad word or watching something inappropriate – then asking for forgiveness is acceptable. But for major sins like killing, rape, or adultery, punishment must be applied. After that, we can’t declare someone forgiven – it’s up to Allah.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 49:12
O you who have believed, avoid much suspicion. Indeed, some suspicion is sin. And do not spy or backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
