Starting the Day with Gratitude
📖Jami at-Tirmidhi 2407Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri narrated (that the Prophet s.a.w) said: “When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning, all of his body parts bow to the tongue and say: ‘Fear Allah regarding us, we are only part of you. If you are straight we are straight and if you are crooked we are crooked.
This hadith highlights the immense power and responsibility of the tongue. It reminds us that what we say affects not just our relationships with others, but also our entire spiritual condition. The tongue leads the body – if it is used rightly (truthfully, kindly, and with remembrance of Allah), the whole person benefits. But if it is used wrongly (for lies, slander, insults, or sin), it leads to corruption of the soul and actions.
Lessons we learn today:
- Speech defines character – Your words reflect what’s in your heart. Good speech means a clean heart.
- Words have consequences – Lies, gossip, or hurtful speech can destroy lives. You are responsible.
- Control of the tongue = control of your life – If your tongue is disciplined, your entire being follows.
- Tongue affects the Day of Judgment – Most people will enter Hell because of what their tongues earned.
Hadith Recap:
“When the son of Adam wakes up, all the limbs plead with the tongue: ‘Fear Allah regarding us, for we are only part of you. If you are straight, we are straight; if you are crooked, we are crooked.’”
You’re asking:
“How can body parts speak before I even say something and how is this true based on science?”
The Answer: Not Literal Talking – but Internal Signaling
The body parts are not talking like humans, but here’s how it’s scientifically true:
1. Neural Feedback System (Body → Brain)
Every part of your body sends signals (electrical + chemical) to your brain through the nervous system.
Even before you speak, your body sends data like:
- Hormone levels
- Stress signals
- Pain or fatigue
- Emotional states
These signals influence what you say or how you say it.
So metaphorically, it’s as if the body is “saying”:
“Don’t say something stupid that will hurt us all!”
Reference: Neurons and Their Role in the Nervous System
2. Pre-Speech Brain Processing
Before you speak a single word, your prefrontal cortex (decision-making center) runs an internal “check”:
- Is what I’m about to say safe?
- Will it get me into trouble?
- Is it moral or immoral?
This internal filter is your body speaking to your tongue. It’s like a warning system, saying:
“Be careful. We all suffer for your words.”
Reference: Prefrontal Cortex
3. Somatic Marker Hypothesis (Antonio Damasio)
In neuroscience, this theory says:
Your body creates emotional signals (“somatic markers”) from past experiences, and these warn you before actions, including speech.
These internal warnings help you avoid harm – like body parts saying:
“Last time you lied, it caused damage. Don’t do it again.”
Reference: Somatic Marker Hypothesis
4. Epigenetics & Stress Hormones
Words you speak affect gene expression and hormone balance. For example:
- Lying or arguing increases cortisol (stress hormone).
- Speaking truthfully increases oxytocin (peace hormone).

So when you use your tongue wrongly, your body chemically “suffers” — it’s like body parts complaining.
📖Quran 36:65
“Today We seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will testify to what they used to do.”
This shows that body parts are not mindless – they hold memories, and on Judgment Day, they testify.
Today, science says:
- Your cells, nerves, and even DNA hold memory of actions.
- So when the Prophet ﷺ says they “plead” to the tongue — it aligns with this concept.
📖Quran 33:70
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.”
Righteous speech is commanded; justice starts with words.
📖Quran 49:11
“Let not some people mock others… nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames.”
Verbal abuse, mocking, and name-calling are condemned directly in the Qur’an.
📖Quran 17:53
“And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan sows discord among them.”
Good speech avoids conflict and keeps Satan out of our relationships.
