📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6016
Narrated Abu Shuraih: The Prophet ﷺ said, “By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe!” It was said, “Who is that, O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ?” He replied, “That person whose neighbor does not feel safe from his evil.”

Explanation:
This Hadith is a very serious warning. The Prophet ﷺ swore three times – a rare and intense emphasis — declaring that a person is not a true believer if their neighbor feels unsafe or harmed by them. The word “evil” (sharr) here is general and includes verbal abuse, spying, noise, gossip, envy, insults, harassment, or any kind of harm, It doesn’t matter how much someone prays, fasts, or talks about Islam – if they are toxic to their neighbors, the Prophet ﷺ himself said: “They do not truly believe.

What counts as “evil”?

  • Spreading rumors or gossip
  • Playing loud music or making disturbing noise
  • Staring, spying, or acting suspiciously
  • Dumping trash or damaging property
  • Arguing, cursing, or threatening
  • Being arrogant, showing no concern for others’ peace

Whether the neighbor is Muslim or non-Muslim, this Hadith applies to everyone. The Prophet ﷺ did not limit it to Muslim neighbors. Islam promotes universal justice and peaceful coexistence, and true faith reflects in behavior — especially toward those closest in daily life.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 4:36
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess.
Indeed, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.

Living near someone gives you a position of responsibility – you see them, hear them, and sometimes affect their peace more than anyone else. That’s why both the Qur’an and the Sunnah stress neighborly rights heavily.

📖Quran 49:11
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people… and do not insult one another or call each other by offensive nicknames.”
Mockery and insults often begin in close circles – including neighbors – and Islam shuts this door from the start.

If your neighbor fears your behavior, then you are not living Islam – even if you think you’re practicing it. Islam is not just rituals – it is character.
