📖Sunan Abi Dawud 3477
Narrated A man: A man from the immigrants of the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) said: I participated in battle three times along with the Prophet (ﷺ). I heard him say: “Muslims have common share in three things: grass, water, and fire.
Explanation:
This Hadith means that every Muslim has a right to these basic, essential resources – grass (pasture), water, and fire. These are not to be privately hoarded, especially when others are in need. Regardless of someone’s wealth or status, they must not be denied these things unless there is a genuine, valid reason (such as someone trying to take control of a water source or hoard public grazing land), It highlights Islam’s emphasis on communal welfare — the poor and needy must be given access, even if the wealthy are unable to help with money. These resources are part of daily survival for both humans and animals, and denying them goes against the spirit of mercy and justice in Islam.
This is one Hadith, but there are other Hadiths that explain situations when things can be refused if there’s genuine necessity. However, these three things must always be shared, because:
- Not all Muslims have money.
- Zakat and sadaqah apply to the rich, but these apply to all.
- No one should say, “I can’t give it” when it comes to water, fire, or grass.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 41:10
“He placed firm mountains on it, and blessed it. And He determined its [resources] in four Days, for all who ask.”
→ Earth’s resources are created for everyone, not private ownership.
📖Quran 80:24–32
“Let man look at his food—how We poured down water in abundance, then We split the earth in clefts, and caused to grow therein grain, grapes, herbs, olives, palm trees, gardens, fruits, and pasture – as a provision for you and your animals.”
→ Allah says pasture (grass) is for both humans and animals, and it’s part of Allah’s shared provision.
📖Quran 56:71–73
“Have you seen the fire that you kindle? Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the Producer? We have made it a reminder and a provision for the travelers in the wilderness.”
→ This verse shows that fire is created by Allah as a blessing and provision, especially for those in need, like travelers. It reminds us that it is not owned by anyone, and must not be withheld from others.
