Mercy to Children and Respect for Elders
📖Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1921
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “He is not one of us who is neither merciful to our young, nor respects the rights of our elders, nor enjoins good and forbids evil.”
This Hadith emphasizes the core ethical principles of Islam. Being part of the community of believers is not merely a matter of declaration; it requires practical actions that reflect mercy, respect, and moral responsibility.
- Mercy to the young: Treating children with kindness, teaching them, guiding them, and protecting their rights.
- Respect for elders: Honoring parents, grandparents, teachers, and those with wisdom and experience, valuing their dignity and rights.
- Enjoining good and forbidding evil: Encouraging righteousness and discouraging wrongdoing in one’s family, community, and society.
What We Learn from It Today:
- True faith is shown through actions, not words alone.
- A balanced society depends on compassion for the young, respect for the elderly, and accountability for ethical behavior.
- Neglecting these responsibilities distances a person from the prophetic example.
Examples of Good and Evil:
Good (Enjoin):
- Teaching children manners, Qur’an, and Islamic values
- Supporting elders in daily life
- Encouraging honesty, charity, justice, and kindness in society
- Correcting someone gently when they are wrong
Evil (Forbid):
- Abusing or neglecting children
- Disrespecting or humiliating elders
- Encouraging lies, theft, oppression, or injustice
- Remaining silent when wrongdoing occurs and having the ability to stop it
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 4:36
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and show kindness to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.
📖Quran 49:13
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.”
📖Quran 3:104
“And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be successful.
📖Quran 31:14
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”
