Advice, Unity, and Obedience

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2658
Narrated ‘Abdul-Malik bin ‘Umair from ‘Abdur-Rahman bin ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud who narrated from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ who said: May Allah beautify a man who hears a saying of mine, so he understands it, remembers it, and conveys it. Perhaps he carries the Fiqh to one who has more understanding than him. There are three with which the heart of a Muslim shall not be deceived: sincerity in deeds for Allah, giving sincere advice (Nasihah) to the leaders of the Muslims, and sticking to the Jama’ah. For indeed the call (of Islam) is protected from behind them.”

Explanation:
This hadith shows the importance of preserving and spreading authentic knowledge of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ made du’a (a supplication) for the one who:

  1. Listens to his sayings,
  2. Understands them,
  3. Remembers them, and
  4. Conveys them to others.

Even if the one conveying the message isn’t the most knowledgeable, it might benefit someone more qualified — which shows the chain of knowledge transmission in Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ then emphasized three things that protect the heart from corruption:

  • Ikhlas (Sincerity) in actions purely for Allah.
  • Nasihah (sincere advice) to Muslim leaders (for the betterment of the Ummah).
  • Holding to the Jama’ah, the united body of Muslims on truth.

Who is the Jama’ah?
The Jama’ah refers to the main group of Muslims who hold firmly to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Historically, this has always been the largest group upon the truth. But the Prophet ﷺ also warned that near the end of time, this united group may vanish or become unclear.

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 3606
Hudhaifa said: People used to ask the Messenger ﷺ about good, but I used to ask him about evil lest it should overtake me.. The Prophet ﷺ warned him about future fitnah and deviations, and advised to stick to the Qur’an and Sunnah even if no Jama’ah or Imam is found.

So what if no clear Jama’ah exists today?
When the majority divide into sects and the clear Jama’ah is missing, the only safe way is to follow Qur’an and authentic Hadith without bias or blind following of any sect.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 3:103
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you — when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together…”
➡ The “rope of Allah” is the Qur’an and Sunnah, not any group or sect name.

📖Quran 6:153
“And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.”
➡ A clear command to stick to one straight path – Qur’an and Sunnah – and avoid all deviations.

📖Quran 4:59
“O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger — if you believe in Allah and the Last Day…”
➡ Settling disputes and confusion must always return to Qur’an and Sunnah – not sect leaders.
