Forgiveness for a Legally Punishable Sin

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6823
Narrated Anas bin Malik: While I was with the Prophet ﷺ, a man came and said, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! I have committed a legally punishable sin; please inflict the legal punishment on me.” The Prophet ﷺ did not ask him what he had done. Then the time for the prayer became due and the man offered prayer along with the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ had finished his prayer, the man again got up and said, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! I have committed a legally punishable sin; please inflict the punishment on me according to Allah’s Laws, The Prophet ﷺ said, “Didn’t you pray with us?” He said, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah has forgiven your sin” or “your legally punishable sin.”

Explanation:
This hadith shows the mercy of Allah and the special authority of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet did not ask about the exact sin, nor did he enforce any punishment. Instead, he confirmed that Allah forgave the man after he performed salah (prayer), which wiped out the sin – by Allah’s will, However, this does not mean anyone today can commit any sin and expect automatic forgiveness just by praying. The Prophet ﷺ received direct revelation from Allah and could speak with divine certainty. We do not have that authority.

So we must base forgiveness only on:

  1. Qur’an
  2. Authentic Hadith
  3. Understanding the type of sin (major/minor, public/private, punishable/forgivable)

📖Quran 4:64
And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you [O Muhammad] and asked forgiveness of Allah, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse proves that the presence and intercession of the Prophet ﷺ was crucial. Those who committed sins at that time had to come willingly, without being forced, and with sincerity. It was a real test of their humility and recognition of their mistake, It was not revealed for those who mocked, resisted truth, or only pretended to repent. The verse targets those who committed sin without full knowledge or understanding and were ready to repent with submission, not excuses.
