The Spiritual Benefits of Illness

📖Sunan Abi Dawud 3092
Narrated Umm al-Ala: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited me while I was sick. He said: Be glad, Umm al-Ala’, for Allah removes the sins of a Muslim for his illness as fire removes the dross of gold and silver.”

Explanation:
This hadith teaches that illness is not a punishment, but a mercy and purification from Allah. Just like fire removes the impurities from gold and silver, Allah uses sickness to clean the heart and soul of a believer from hidden sins and mistakes, More importantly, it is necessary – because if humans were always healthy and comfortable, they would forget Allah. People remember God most in pain, in weakness, in fear – that is when the heart turns sincere. So Allah allows illness as a reminder of our weakness and His power, Allah doesn’t need to hurt us to forgive us – but He created this system for our own good. Through it, we gain humility, patience, spiritual growth, and closeness to Allah. Even the pain itself becomes reward, and the sins are wiped away.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 10:12
And when harm touches man, he calls upon Us, lying on his side or sitting or standing. But when We remove his harm, he continues as if he had never called upon Us…
→ Illness makes people remember Allah — but without it, many forget Him.

📖Quran 64:11
No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah – He will guide his heart.
→ Sickness is from Allah – and for believers, it is spiritual guidance.

This verse means everything that happens – even tragedy, war, or death – happens only with Allah’s permission. But that does not mean Allah forced someone to commit evil. Rather:

  • Humans choose their own actions by free will.
  • Allah allows or stops things based on His divine wisdom and justice.
  • If someone kills, Allah permitted the event to occur, not the sin itself. The killer chose evil, and Allah will punish them for it.
  • If someone is tested, Allah allowed the test to happen – not to destroy them, but to see how they respond and to purify or elevate them.

🔹 For example:
If two groups go to war, and innocent people are harmed, Allah already warned in the Qur’an that the killer of innocent life will be punished severely.

📖Quran 5:32
Whoever kills a soul… it is as if he had slain mankind entirely.
→ The killer is guilty, and Allah has no injustice in letting their free choice play out.

Meanwhile, those watching the war are also being tested:

  • Do they help the truth?
  • Do they support evil?
  • Do they stay silent?

So even by allowing a disaster, Allah is testing everyone – the ones doing it, the ones harmed, and the ones watching.

📖Quran 3:140
If you have suffered a wound, they too have suffered a wound like it. These are the days that We alternate among the people, so that Allah may know those who believe and take martyrs from among you…
→ Hardship and war are part of Allah’s plan – not without wisdom, but to test and separate the righteous from the wicked.

📖Quran 2:155-157
And We will surely test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and fruits – but give glad tidings to the patient…
→ Allah tests humans to train them – not to destroy them. Patience brings mercy and forgiveness.

📖Quran 42:30
Whatever affliction befalls you is because of what your hands have earned – but He pardons much.
→ Even if we deserve more punishment, Allah forgives most of it, and uses hardship to clean us.

Sickness is not just for removing sins – it is necessary for reminding the human being about Allah. Without pain, many would never pray, reflect, or change. Through illness, Allah brings us closer, removes sin, increases reward, and humbles the heart. This is a system of mercy and growth, not punishment.
