Prohibition of Associating Idols with Allah

📖Sahih Muslim 92
It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas’ud that Waki told (him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “He who dies associating anything with Allah will enter the Fire.” Abdullah b. Mas’ud said: “And I say: Whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.”

Context and Clarification:

This hadith gives a general principle:

  • Shirk = Hell

  • Tawheed = Paradise

But it does not mean that everyone who avoids shirk will automatically enter Paradise without accountability. Other hadiths clarify that some believers will still face punishment or be denied Paradise due to major sins, hypocrisy, or lack of repentance.

Other Hadiths That Clarify This:

1. 📖Sahih Muslim 91b
He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of arrogance will not enter Paradise.”

2. 📖Sahih Muslim 2556a
The one who cuts off family ties will not enter Paradise.”

3. 📖Sahih Muslim 294
When two Muslims confront each other with their swords, both the slayer and the slain are doomed to Hell-Fire.

This hadith does not refer to cases like self-defense where one is attacked and forced to protect themselves. It refers to situations where both sides willingly engage in fighting – for power, politics, land, ego, or personal disputes — and both have the intention to kill, Even if one dies, they are still sinful because their intention was to kill the other Muslim – not to stop the fight or defend truth. So both are guilty in the sight of Allah and deserve punishment unless Allah forgives.

These show that even without shirk, other sins can delay or block Paradise – unless forgiven by Allah.

 So How Do We Reconcile?

📖Sahih Muslim 92 refers to the final outcome after all judgment, accountability, and intercession are complete.

It applies to:

  • Those who never committed shirk (open or hidden).
  • Those who followed what the Prophet ﷺ commanded.
  • Those who died upon sincere Tawheed, even if they committed sins — but either repented, were forgiven, or were purified by punishment.

The hadith applies only after understanding and combining all other hadiths. It is for those who:

➡ Avoided all forms of shirk,
➡ Sincerely followed what Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught,
➡ Fulfilled the obligations of Islam, and
➡ Died in a state of sincere faith and Tawheed.

Only then does the promise of Paradise apply – even if some are delayed from entering it or face punishment first.
