Self-Defense Against Injustice
📖Sunan an-Nasa’i 4096
Abu Ja’far said: I was sitting with Suwaid bin Muqarrin, and he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever is killed defending himself against injustice, he is a martyr.’”
Explanation:
This Hadith proves that Islam is not a religion of aggression. It allows self-defense only when someone is attacked or oppressed, and even then, dying while protecting oneself is honored as martyrdom (shahādah).
The Prophet ﷺ is clearly teaching that if someone:
- Defends their life
- Resists injustice or oppression
- Protects their family, wealth, or honor —
And dies in that struggle, they are rewarded by Allah as a martyr.
❌ Islam forbids:
- Unjust wars
- Killing innocents
- Fighting for ego, land, or nationalism
- Starting conflict without cause
Islam permits fighting only:
- In self-defense
- To protect the oppressed and weak
- To stop ongoing injustice
- To defend faith and family when attacked
Islam Strongly Commands:
Make peace as much as possible. Fighting is a last resort. If the enemy stops or seeks peace — you must stop too.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 22:39
Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is capable of granting them victory.”
Only those who are wronged are allowed to fight back.
📖Quran 2:190
Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.”
Fight only those who fight you. Never cross limits.
📖Quran 4:75
And what is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah and for the oppressed among men, women, and children…”
Fighting is to protect the helpless and oppressed, not for conquest.
📖Quran 8:61
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.”
If the enemy wants peace – you must accept it, even in war.
