Seeking Refuge After Salat
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 2667
Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to seek refuge from these at the end of prayer: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from cowardice. I seek refuge in You from returning to the feebleness of old age. I seek refuge in You from the trials of the world, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave.
Meaning
The Prophet ﷺ himself asked Allah to save him from these dangers – cowardice, weakness, worldly temptations, and the grave’s torment. Though he was sinless, he constantly humbled himself by seeking protection and forgiveness, showing us reliance upon Allah.
- Cowardice → Quran 4:75 — Believers are urged to be courageous for Allah and the oppressed.
- Feebleness of old age → Quran 16:70 — Some are returned to weakness after strength, a test from Allah.
- Trials of the world → Quran 64:15 — Wealth and children are only a trial, and the real reward is with Allah.
- Punishment of the grave → Quran 40:46 — Pharaoh’s people shown fire morning and evening before the Final Hour.
And then Allah confirms even to His Messenger ﷺ:
📖Quran 40:55
So be patient, [O Muhammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
Lesson for Us
- If the Prophet ﷺ – the most guided and sinless – asked Allah’s protection and forgiveness, then we are in even greater need.
- We should regularly seek refuge from cowardice, weakness, worldly temptations, and the grave.
- Forgiveness is not only for sins, but also for protection from shortcomings, trials, and unseen dangers.
So when the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in Allah, it led him to Allah’s commandments. And today, when we seek refuge in Allah, it leads us to remember what Allah has said. This shows that isti‘ādhah (seeking refuge) isn’t just about asking protection, but also about being reminded of Allah’s guidance, His commands, and the message of what will happen if we do not follow
