Prophet’s Words of Glorification and Forgiveness in Prayer
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 4042, Sahih Muslim 484
Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would say in his bowing and prostration, “Glory be to you, Allah our Lord, and your praises. Forgive me.
This supplication combines two great acts: glorifying Allah’s perfection and seeking His forgiveness. The phrase “Forgive me” shows humility – that even when one may not realize a mistake, admitting it before Allah is an act of worship. It is like a child saying to their mother, “I made a mistake unknowingly, forgive me,” and the mother shows mercy instead of punishment. In the same way, Allah forgives His servants when they acknowledge their shortcomings.
When saying “forgive me,” it carries many meanings:
- You may have done something wrong without knowing.
- You may have spoken harshly or acted wrongly in haste.
- You may have forgotten an obligation.
- You may not have shown enough gratitude.
- You may have allowed arrogance, pride, or anger to enter your heart.
- You may have neglected remembering Allah in a moment.
Admitting faults in front of Allah is an act of worship, and His mercy covers those who sincerely ask for forgiveness.
What we learn from it today:
- Admitting mistakes before Allah is strength, not weakness.
- Forgiveness is always open if we sincerely repent.
- Glorifying Allah and seeking forgiveness should go hand in hand.
- We should practice humility, knowing that even unintentional mistakes are seen by Allah.
- Just as forgiveness strengthens family bonds, seeking Allah’s forgiveness strengthens our bond with Him.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 3:135
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins — and who can forgive sins except Allah? — and do not persist in what they have done while they know.
📖Quran 39:53
Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
📖Quran 4:110
And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
📖Quran 11:3
And seek forgiveness of your Lord and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you a good enjoyment for a specified term and give every doer of favor His favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.
This matches the Prophet’s ﷺ words in bowing and prostration, “Forgive me,” showing that worship is not only glorification but also humbling ourselves, admitting mistakes, and seeking Allah’s pardon.
