Moving the Lips in Silent Prayer
đSahih al-Bukhari 777
Abu Maâmar reported: I said to Khabbab, âDid the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recite in the noon and afternoon prayers?â Khabbab said yes. We said, âHow do you know?â Khabbab said, âBy the movement of his beard.â
Description
This hadith shows that during Dhuhr and âAsr (noon and afternoon) prayers, the Prophet ï·ș did not recite loudly but recited silently, enough that his lips moved. Khabbab noticed the movement of his beard and realized that the Prophet ï·ș was indeed reciting Qurâan in these prayers.
Silent recitation in prayer
This proves that silent recitation is acceptable and valid in prayers where the Sunnah is to pray silently (like Dhuhr and âAsr). The movement of the lips and tongue is important – it is not enough to only âthinkâ the verses in the mind. The Qurâan must be physically recited, even if quietly, because prayer requires actual utterance.
What we understand today
From this, we learn that:
- Silent prayer is still active prayer – Allah hears what is whispered or uttered softly.
- Mind-only recitation is not sufficient – there must be lip/tongue movement, as even Khabbab observed.
- Consistency of Sunnah – some prayers are recited not to be so loud (Fajr, Maghrib, Isha) and others silently (Dhuhr, Asr). This balance trains the believer in both public worship and private devotion.
Quranic Context
đQuran 17:110
Say, âCall upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever name you callâHis are the best names. And do not recite your prayer too loudly or too quietly, but seek a way between.â
What the Qurâan means by âtoo quietlyâ
- Too quietlyâ here refers to reciting only in the mind, with absolutely no tongue or lip movement.
- That is not considered recitation at all.
- Prayer requires actual articulation – even if no one else hears, the lips and tongue must move.
đQuran 20:7
And if you speak aloud, then indeed, He knows the secret and what is even more hidden.
Silent recitation is fully heard by Allah, even when people cannot hear.
đQuran 73:20
So recite what is easy [for you] of the Qurâan. He knows that there will be among you those who are ill, others traveling, and others fighting in the cause of Allah.
The command to recite makes it clear that movement of the tongue and lips is essential, not just silent thought.
