Abandoning prayer leads to polytheism and unbelief
đSahih Muslim 82 b
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Zubair that he heard Jabir ibn âAbdullah saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah ï·ș say: “Between a man and polytheism and disbelief is the abandonment of salah (prayer).”
Best Description:
This hadith is a severe warning from the Prophet ï·ș, showing how central salah (prayer) is to the identity of a Muslim. The Prophet ï·ș draws a clear line – the one thing separating a believer from disbelief is the regular observance of prayer. Abandoning it is not a small sin – it’s a gateway to kufr (disbelief) and associating partners with Allah (shirk), as prayer is the ultimate expression of Tawheed (Oneness of Allah).
But this doesnât mean that someone becomes a disbeliever immediately if they miss a prayer due to forgetfulness, illness, or a genuine reason. Allah is Merciful and Just. This hadith refers to someone who:
- Knowingly, repeatedly, and deliberately abandons salah
- Has no excuse, is fully healthy and aware
- And treats the obligation of prayer as if itâs not important
Even if someone misses the prayer unintentionally, Islam shows mercy.
đSahih al-Bukhari 597
Narrated Anas: The Prophet ï·ș said, âIf anyone forgets a prayer he should pray that prayer when he remembers it. There is no expiation except to pray the same.â Then he recited: âEstablish prayer for My (i.e. Allahâs) remembrance.â (20.14).
This shows that missing a prayer due to forgetfulness is not kufr, but a person should make it up when they remember. However, the importance of prayer was so great that during the Prophetâs ï·ș time, he could even command and enforce it upon people – not to show power, but to demonstrate its critical value for salvation. This was a divine right given only to the Prophet ï·șÂ – we, as Muslims today, are only meant to follow his example and teach with wisdom. Forcing someone now would defeat the very purpose of salah, which is to express true devotion to Allah, not mechanical obedience.
What We Learn Today:
- Salah is non-negotiable – it’s the foundation of Islam after the shahadah.
- Missing a prayer occasionally out of forgetfulness or sleep, while sinful, does not equal disbelief – especially if one repents.
- But deliberately abandoning salah out of laziness, with no effort to return, is a path toward kufr, as warned in this hadith.
- Your connection with Allah begins with salah – when you cut it off willingly and carelessly, you risk cutting yourself off from faith itself.
Quranic Context:
đQuran 19:59
But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and followed their desires. So they will meet with destruction.
Neglecting salah leads to destruction – spiritual and eternal.
đQuran 29:45
Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds.
Salah protects faith – abandoning it leaves a person open to sin and disbelief.
đQuran 4:103
Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at fixed times.
Salah is not optional – it is a command that every Muslim must obey unless genuinely excused.
The Purpose of Worship
Qurâan 51:56-58
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, it is AllÄh who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.
- Worshiping God is not about an imposition but a divine gift with inherent benefits for the person. Prayer, especially five times a day, is a practice that not only strengthens the relationship with God but also serves as a safeguard for the individual. While one may not always perceive the immediate benefits, the act of worship keeps the person grounded, focused, and aligned with higher principles. Daily prayer serves as a constant reminder to stay away from immorality, such as adultery or injustice, because it creates a rhythm of reflection and mindfulness. It builds a personâs character, influencing their decisions throughout the day. In a world where distractions like social media can lead one astray, prayer offers a pause, redirecting time and energy towards something meaningful. The time that might otherwise be spent on fleeting and potentially harmful activities is instead dedicated to a higher purpose, providing inner peace and guiding individuals away from negative behavior and thoughts. Thus, prayer is not only a form of worship but a form of self-care. It provides mental clarity, strengthens resolve, and enhances moral integrity. Even if the benefits are not immediately obvious, they accumulate over time, leading a person towards a more righteous and fulfilling life.
- The verse Qurâan 35:15 (âO mankind, you are the ones in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthyâ) highlights that humans are inherently in need of God, while God is self-sufficient and does not require anything from us. This emphasizes that worship and obedience to God are not because He needs them, but because it is for our own benefit. Now, if one questions why they should follow Godâs commands since they donât âneedâ God in the way we depend on each other, it can be understood through a simple analogy: Just as we follow the laws of the country we live in, which are made to maintain order and peace, following Godâs guidance is crucial for our spiritual, moral, and emotional well-being. Just as disobeying the laws of the land can lead to punishments or consequences, disobeying Godâs laws can lead to spiritual consequences that affect the soul, life, and afterlife. The relationship between God and an individual is not one of coercion but of guidance. A person has the free will to choose their path. However, just as a person cannot reject the laws of the country without facing consequences, rejecting Godâs guidance comes with spiritual consequences. Obeying Godâs commands is a way to live in harmony with the natural order He has set for us, leading to peace, fulfillment, and ultimate success in both this world and the Hereafter. God created us with the capacity to choose, and this choice includes accepting His commands or rejecting them. However, rejecting His laws does not mean escaping responsibility; it only leads to hardship, much like violating any societal law leads to consequences. The wisdom in following Godâs guidance is not because He gains from it, but because we, as His creation, benefit immensely-spiritually, mentally, and morally-from following the path He has set for us.
Understanding the Purpose of Prayer and Allahâs Wisdom in Answering
The purpose and importance of prayer, emphasizing that it is first and foremost for our own benefit. Prayer is a way to seek guidance, mercy, and blessings from Allah. However, itâs important to remember that the outcome of our prayers is within Allahâs knowledge, and sometimes we may not get what we expect. For instance, if we pray for the well-being of a child, but it is written that the child will pass away at a certain time, we must accept that Allahâs plan is beyond our understanding. Our prayers are not wasted; even if they are not answered in the way we desire, we are rewarded for seeking Allahâs help. As stated in a hadith, sometimes prayers are delayed, or something better is stored for us in the Hereafter. This teaches us to trust in Allahâs wisdom and to accept that His decisions are always in our best interest, even when we do not understand them fully.
Sahih Muslim 2735 a
Abu Huraira reported that Allahâs Messenger (ï·ș) said: The supplication of every one of you is granted if he does not grow impatient and says: I supplicated but it was not granted.
- A person can pray his entire life, as it is stated that the supplication of every one of you is granted. However, it is important to understand the condition in the Qurâan and Hadith that God has already written our fate. For instance, if I pray to God to become a doctor, but it is not part of my destiny, I am asking for something that isnât meant for me. But I trust that I do not know my destinyâonly God knows. Therefore, my prayer is not in vain; rather, it will be preserved for the hereafter or replaced with something better in this world. Yet, God will not grant my desire to be a doctor if it is not part of what has been decreed for me.
Surah At-Tawbah (9:51)
Say, âNever will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.â And upon Allah let the believers rely.
Destiny, Prayer, and Godâs Willâ – âA Reflection on Fate and Faith
For non-Muslims, even if they do not ask God, they will receive what is mentioned in the Qurâan because their fate has already been written about what they will get in their life. But for Muslims, if they deny God, they will find exactly what is in their destiny, but the punishment for disbelievers, especially, will be a depressed life. They will get everything even if they didnât ask because itâs part of the destiny, yet God will give them more so they will commit more sin because they rejected God. For Muslims, we ask and glorify God for everything, but even if we donât ask, it will still happen.
Quran 20:124
And whoever turns away from My remembrance â indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.â
Quran 2:212
Beautified for those who disbelieve is the life of this world, and they ridicule those who believe â
Quran 3:178
And those who disbelieve are not to think they are causing Us failure. Indeed, they will never cause Us failure. And let them not think that when We extend to them good things in this world, it is because of their good deeds. We only extend to them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
- Itâs also important to note that some people knowingly reject the verses meant for them, but there are others who may not know exactly the message. It is not possible to declare anything about them; it is up to God to judge because we do not know exactly who knows and who doesnât, or what is in their heart.
Conclusion:
This hadith draws a clear red line: Abandoning salah knowingly and carelessly is a step into disbelief. It’s not talking about those who forget, are sick, or struggle but still try. Allah knows your situation – but deliberate neglect is dangerous, Salah is more than just a ritual – it’s your direct link to Allah. Protect it – or risk losing the very identity of being a believer.
