Obey Your Leader Regardless of Race or Status

📖Sahih Muslim 1838 a
It has been narrated on the authority of Yahya b. Husain who learnt the tradition from his grandmother. She said that she heard the Prophet ﷺ delivering his sermon on the occasion of the Last Pilgrimage. He was saying: “If a slave is appointed over you and he conducts your affairs according to the Book of Allah, you should listen to him and obey (his orders).”

Best Description:
This hadith was stated during a time when slavery still existed, and social status was deeply tied to wealth, lineage, and power. The Prophet ﷺ was shattering that mindset. He didn’t promote slavery – rather, he was emphasizing that leadership and obedience should be based on adherence to the Qur’an, not on someone’s background, race, or past condition, In that time, even if a former slave – someone seen as socially inferior – was appointed as a leader and ruled according to the Book of Allah, Muslims were instructed to obey and respect him. This shows the universal equality and merit-based leadership that Islam calls for.

Today, this means:

  • It doesn’t matter if the leader is poor, uneducated in worldly terms, or of a different race.
  • If someone believes in Allah, follows the Qur’an, and leads with justice and truth – we must obey and support him.
  • Worldly degrees or elite background mean nothing if the person lacks Islamic knowledge and sincerity.
  • Leadership in Islam is about Taqwa, truth, and Qur’anic justice – not about titles, money, or fame.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 49:13
O mankind! We created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
Righteousness – not race, class, or status –  defines leadership in Islam.

📖Quran 4:59
O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. But if you differ in anything, refer it to Allah and His Messenger — if you believe in Allah and the Last Day.
We obey leaders as long as they rule by the Qur’an and Sunnah.

📖Quran 38:26
O David! We have made you a successor (khalifah) on the earth, so judge between people with truth and do not follow desire, lest it lead you astray from the path of Allah.
Leadership must be grounded in truth and divine justice, not personal interest or class status.

Conclusion:
The Prophet ﷺ made it clear that Islamic leadership is not reserved for the elite, and no one is disqualified based on race, poverty, or lack of status. Even someone once considered a slave can become a rightful leader if they rule by the Book of Allah, We follow righteousness – not resumes, The only question is: Does this person follow the Qur’an and uphold justice? If yes, then obey – because that’s what Allah commands.
