Human Rights and Basic Needs
📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2341
‘Uthman bin ‘Affan narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: There is no right for the son of Adam in other than these things: a house which he lives in, a garment which covers his nakedness, and a piece of bread and water.”
What Does It Mean?
This hadith is not saying a person cannot have more, but that he has no rightful claim over things beyond basic needs. In essence:
1. True Needs, Not Entitlement
- You do not automatically have a right to other people’s wealth, houses, land, or luxury.
- Allah owns everything – but in this temporary world, humans live by a system of rights and limits to test who follows truth and justice.
2. Be Grateful, Not Entitled
Once you have:
- A home to live in,
- Clothes to cover yourself,
- Food and water to survive —
It is not allowed to question Allah with arrogance or claim:
“Why didn’t Allah give me more?”
- You can request, make du‘a, and work for more.
- But you cannot demand or accuse Allah of being unfair.
Complaining about Allah’s wisdom, or comparing your share to others, leads only to envy and ingratitude.
So What About Family, Inheritance, and Provision?
- Islam gives people rights through law: for example, a wife has a right over her husband’s support, children inherit, etc.
- These rights come from Allah’s system, not because we deserve ownership by default.
Public Spaces and Worship in Islam
Public places like parks, streets, or masjids are not private property of individuals, But at the same time, no one has absolute right to use any space without permission from the owner or the governing system.
- Worship can be done in public places if allowed,
- But we do not have entitlement to take over a space that belongs to someone else or is governed by specific rules.
What About Masjids, Makkah, and Madinah?
In general, masjids are for all believers —
📖Quran 72:18
“And the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke anyone along with Allah.”
This verse shows that masjids are not for personal ownership or private control, They are dedicated solely to the worship of Allah, and no one should use them for personal status, fame, or restriction, If a masjid is built or land is donated for Allah’s sake, then it cannot remain under a single person’s name or authority, It becomes a place for all Muslims, and no one has the right to say, “I don’t allow you here,” based on personal feelings or control, Masjids are meant to be free from worldly ownership, and must remain houses of worship, not private property, Even if one person donates the land, it is no longer theirs – it now belongs to Allah, and by extension, to the Muslim Ummah under trust.
In Makkah and Madinah, believers have full rights to enter and worship.
These are sacred zones where the land was dedicated for worship alone,
But still, even there, Muslims must follow the system in place – such as respecting boundaries, not harming others, and obeying rules set by the authorities.
Believers Also Have Rights Over Each Other:
📖Sahih Muslim 2162
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The rights of one Muslim over another are six…”
- When you meet him, greet him with salam
- When he invites you, accept
- When he seeks your advice, give it sincerely
- When he sneezes and praises Allah, say “Yarhamukallah”
- When he is sick, visit him
- When he dies, follow his funeral
🟢 These six are the most important manners to practice in daily life — simple actions that build love and unity in the Ummah, But when necessary, the rights of a believer go beyond these six, such as:
- Helping him in hardship
- Defending his honor
- Forgiving his mistakes
- Feeding the hungry
- Protecting him from harm
- Giving charity or support when he’s in need
📖Quran 9:71
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, establish prayer and give zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. It is they whom Allah will have mercy upon. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
This shows the true brotherhood of Islam – starting with small daily acts, and extending to sacrifice and support in times of need.
📖Quran 49:10
“The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.”
→ This includes help, forgiveness, protecting honor, financial support, and more.
