Be gentle in speech, not harsh or profane
📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6030
Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: You must be gentle, and beware of harshness and obscenity.”
What We Learn:
Yes – Islam promotes gentleness. But don’t twist this Hadith to excuse criminal behavior or inaction in the face of evil, This Hadith teaches manners, not passivity. It does not mean you should remain gentle toward those who:
- Commit adultery openly
- Kill innocents without right
- Spread corruption in society
- Oppress others or abuse power
Justice is a pillar of Islam. Gentleness is for da’wah, family, and dealing with ignorance – not for criminals and enemies of Allah.
Quranic Context:
📖Quran 3:159
“And had you been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from around you…”
☑ This is about keeping unity and compassion among believers – not tolerating criminals.
📖Quran 5:33
“Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land…”
📖Quran 24:2
“The woman and the man guilty of adultery – lash each one of them with a hundred lashes. And do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah…”
📖Quran 2:179
“And there is [legal] retribution in murder – life for you, O people of understanding, that you may become righteous.”
📖Sahih Muslim 1709
The Prophet ﷺ said: Swear allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, not commit adultery, not steal, not kill anyone whom Allah has forbidden except with right. Whoever fulfills it, his reward is with Allah. Whoever commits any of these sins and is punished, that is his atonement. But whoever commits them and Allah hides it, his matter is with Allah – if He wills, He will forgive him, or if He wills, He will punish him.”
Explanation:
-
“Allah hides it” means:
- Even if someone escapes worldly punishment, Allah can still expose them – like guiding authorities to the criminal.
- But if Allah doesn’t make it public, it’s not ignorance – it’s His will and knowledge. Just as a murderer may escape police, but Allah could’ve exposed him – yet He didn’t.
-
That’s why the Prophet ﷺ said:
- “If punished, it is his atonement.”
- But if not caught, “his matter is with Allah” – not forgiven by default, but subject to Allah’s Will. He may punish or may forgive based on His justice and wisdom.
