Avoid Insulting Names

📖Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3268
Abu Jabirah ibn al-Dahhak reported: A man used to have two or three names by which he was called. Perhaps he hated one of them, so Allah revealed the verse, “Do not insult each other with offensive nicknames.” (49:11)

Explanation

This hadith emphasizes respect and dignity in how we address others. People may have names they dislike or that carry negative associations. Using offensive nicknames can hurt feelings, create enmity, and spread disrespect, which goes against the teachings of Islam.

Why it is forbidden:

  • Every human has dignity and honor; mocking or insulting names undermines that.
  • It can create division and conflict within the community.
  • Islam teaches believers to maintain good character, kindness, and respect for one another.

Quranic Context:

📖Quran 49:11
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them. Nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after faith. And whoever does not repent — then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

📖Quran 49:12
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

Lesson for Today:

  • Respect others’ identities and names; avoid mocking, gossip, or offensive labels.
  • Good character and honoring people strengthen community ties and reflect obedience to Allah.
  • Using offensive nicknames or mocking others is not just rude; it is a sin that Allah warns against.
